Default Vehicle Safety Inspections?

Do they have any sort of vehicle safety inspections in Tucson?

I remember seeing cars there in the 70's that were driving around without a driver's door or a hood. Do they ticket people for stuff like that?

Is there any smog test or will police pull you over if you have a headlight out on your car?

There are smog tests every other year, for most cars, in Pima County (Tucson) and Maricopa County (Phoenix).

They had safety inspections statewide when I was a kid, but no more.

But yes, you can get pulled over and get an equipment citation for a missing headlight, taillight, etc.

Hmmm, hot rodders must seek out '66 and older vehicles.

The vehicle safety inspections here, while made with I guess good intentions, are so different from station to station, and typically a car would fail at different stations and all for different reasons. It seems like a lure to get people into the station to sell them tires and batteries.

Can a person drive around with a cracked windshield forever in Tuscon and never have a problem?

From talking to athe guy that runs Desert Hybrids (in Tucson) the emission tests are not difficult to pass. He builds Chevy powered Porsche 914's. He makes up mock catalytic converters and uses gutted AIR pumps. He said that if it is tuned correctly it will pass and the mock parts pass the visual inspection.

I hope he is right because I will need to get my 1984 Chevy v8 powered Porsche 944 through emissions when we move to Tucson.

sickofIL just a thought...
You might want to edit the name of that company in your post to "a company in Tucson"... just a thought 'cause I wouldn't want anybody to get in trouble.

I didn't know they were putting SB Chevy's in those cars - that's radical and I don't blame you although I'm sure the Porsche fanatics have a different view!
