That is a nice looking hotel. Never been in it myself. It's near a very affluent neighborhood, and is near one of the biggest parks (if not biggest?) in town.

I'd say the SW certainly has the worst stigma of all places in the area.

You say SW and people think hookers, drug dealers, home invasions, car jackings, murder, gangland, etc..

You say Sahuarita and people either have no clue, or think redneck.

I've seen the place but have never been inside, Chowhound.

Definitely SW. Sahuarita is a pristine area in the middle of nowhere... very Stepford-ish... ask Sierra, she'll agree.

On another note: The cops were hanging around a lot yesterday. In my comings and goings, I saw three different cars pulled over. Speeding stops? Running red lights?

Personally, I think they were all heinous meth-addicted murders and dog-punchers! (DOOOOM GLOOOM SCARY)

Okay, serious-time. I didn't know they really did this (I thought it was something you had to go out of you way to find out - I.E. request the info from appropriate sources and/or look it up on some convoluted government website), but we got a mailing in the post the other day letting us know a guy who got convicted of rapping someone back in the 70's (twenty-something years in jail later) has moved in a few blocks from us.

So, my question to those of you who have expressed concern (and apparently live in crippling fear of anyone other than themselves and their immediate family) is: What brand of pepper spray is the best? Or, being that this is AZ, should I skip that and just get a gun?

Notice all the shady people at the bus stops at Grant and Alvernon. Then notice that the majority of them never get on a bus.

Last summer I used those bus stops for four months, as well as those on Alvernon/Speedway and Broadway. Perhaps things have changed since a year ago; but I can tell you that when I rode the bus there, everyone was getting on. People taking the bus are bound to have backpacks/bags.

However, I'm going to notice tomorrow when I'm over that way and see if it really has changed in a year.

I do see more active drug deals and what appears to be that kind of activity all around the midtown area. I've been told the motorized bikes going down Columbus are illegal and are drug couriers, "call the cops if you see one."

I also see many children playing in the side streets in the late afternoon, and people walking with babies in carriages--everyone is dealing with the crime atmosphere in their own way.

When I'm driving, especially at the Grant/Alvernon intersection, I keep my eyes on the road, the cop cars, listen for sirens, and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalks and jay walking.

I'd love to stop my car in the middle of the road and assess the backbacks and attitudes of those loitering at the bus stops; would enjoy just stopping traffic to wait and see, make a count of all who board vs. those who stay.

But gee, even the observant casual observer must focus on the obvious, i.e. staying alive while driving.

It's the same way certain people find the time while driving to count the number of people in a bus. I don't get it. But, I've been trying to look and I've never once seen an empty bus. Makes you say, 'Hmmm....'
