I have read a lot of negative about the southern part of Tucson. I don't doubt the people that live in the town but I would like some clarification. On realtor.com I notice lots of nice looking homes built in the last 5-15 years around 125-150k. A lot of these areas are near the airport. Is virtually all of southern Tucson an area I would want to avoid if buying a house? It seems like usually areas with crime are much older homes and these homes look well taken care of. Some examples are in the 7000 block of south blueeys, south of Valenica between Aviation way and Wimor Rd. Many of the other homes are in this general area. Also, if this area isn't a good area to live in, are there areas of nicer parts of town reasonably priced? Thanks for the responses.

Most of us locals don't care for this area. It may not be necessarily dangerous, but it's unpleasant.

Just for clarification, Knrstz . . .

Generally speaking, Southern Tucson includes an expansive area South of Broadway that includes some fairly nice areas as well as some "rough" neighborhoods with higher crime issues.

Then there is South Tucson which is a separate "rough" city altogether with a very poor reputation due to crime.

I hope this information helps and Good Luck.

Ha-ha, yeah, while South Tucson is only highly questionable, The City of South Tucson is definitely not a place one wants to set foot in.

Welcome to City of South Tucson

Do you think I can find a nice small house/condo with garage, 2bdrm, 900-1300 sq ft, nice area, around the same price range, $115k-$135k?

It's a possibility at this time. Heck, a short sale of the same model as mine in my neighborhood is listed for 139K! Can't tell you how thrilled I am! It's a 3 BR and bigger square footage.

Oh, I hear you, Sierra. A condo with the exact same age and floor plan as ours in this complex just sold for $40K less than we paid three years ago. I'm not lovin' it.

Piece of Cake, Knrstz.

In the area where I live there are both 2 Bedroom 2 Bath and 3 Bedroom 2 Bath Patio Homes with 2 Car Garages for sale. The 2/2's have dropped down into the $135k range and possibly lower depending on the unit.

Very convenient and safe, literally walking distance to just about everything.

Good Luck

No, you don't need to avoid everything "south" of Tucson. What you need to avoid is "The City of South Tucson". I drive to the airport quite a bit and there is an area around Kino Pkwy/Campbell/Tucson Blvd/Irvington that looks ( and I say looks because I know nothing about it) rather nice. Typical adobe 2 story tract homes but near a library, shopping, and the airport. Now, I may be way off base, but as I said, it looks nice. I have no idea what schools are nearby, what the crime rate is, what the housing costs are or whether it's a gang area or not. But, it does seem to appear as though the houses are taken care of, yards are nice, etc. If it's a bad area, the people on this board will know, and they'll be more able to help you, really, than I can. I hope you find what you're looking for.

I would also consider who the builder was. Most of the newer houses on the South side were built by KB. I wouldn't buy a KB home myself.
