Hello,
I am looking to move to Claremore from Wisconsin. Our bike season here is very short April to November but the riding is great with lots of back roads. Can anyone tell me what it is like to bike in Oklahoma. What I am looking for is to join a group of road riders that cover 50 to 80 miles per ride on the weekends and 30 to 40 miles on week nights. I like to ride in the 17 to 20 mph range. Concerns: Traffic, Winds, Heat and Dogs. Thanks for any help. |

Don't know about Claremore, but there is lots of bike riding to be done in Tulsa.
okearthbike.com | Trails | Turkey mountain ![]() The Tulsa buses all come with bike racks too. Tulsa Transit - Bike & Bus Oklahoma FreeWheel Cross State Bicycle Tour As far as the traffic, the above places are free of vehicular traffic. Wind: Sometimes it can be an issue, but Tulsa sits amongst rolling hills so wind is not as much of an issue as it is in parts farther west. Heat: The heat can be much more brutal than Wisconsin, but I've biked down here in DFW and it's much hotter. Dogs: You shouldn't have a problem with dogs on the areas I've posted above. I'm sorry I don't have any particular info on Claremore.

Thanks that is great information. I was start to get discouraged that there was limited sport training type riding in the area. I see now that I may not have been contacting the right people.

Glad to help Dave. Here is a trail maps website from the bike place that you may find useful. I wish you the best of luck. I think you will like Tulsa. BTW, bike riding is great for your health and it's fun too!

Thank for the great leads. The T-Town bike people got back to me with great information. It seems like the Wheelmen org. is just what I am looking for.
I also learned a little about the 40+ mph winds. That sounds a lot better than -20F degree temps and 11 inches of snow to boot. Hope to see you soon. |

Some one just let me know about your question - looks like you got a lot of great help. Let me add just a little:
Welcome to Claremore - my husband and I own the local bike shop - BikeAbout 300 W Will Roger Blvd in the historic downtown. The Wheelman are a great group of riders and several live in Claremore along with Bicycle of Tulsa Race team. We have weekly rides and many come out to join the rides - we have a great group that run 16 mph plus. There are many low traffic routes - hills, wind and sadly a few dogs now and again. The Tulsa area has a strong Tri group, trails, rides all over the state many are charity rides. Stop when you get moved in and we will share area maps with you to get you started riding. |

It's not much but if you want to just get out and bike, I believe Lake Claremore offers trails. You have to be a resident of Claremore to access it btw (which shouldn't be a problem). It's just a nice little area to ride around. But I'm honestly not sure if Claremore has such biker population (now motorcycles is another story) places closer to Tulsa will though.

There are many excellent ride opportunities out of Claremore. It would be a good idea to buy a Rogers County road map, showing paved roads. Then use Google satellite photos to further review possibilities. '
Although a Tulsan, I have ridden to, through, and from Claremore. Riding is especially good to the north, west, and south. In Rogers and Tulsa counties, most section line roads (one every miile, north-south and east-west) are paved and, away from the city, usually light traffic. From Claremore, it is easy to reach Washington county, also. Again, many good paved section line roads. As to groups, I know that both the Tulsa Bicycle Club and The Tulsa Wheelmen have groups that do your stated speed and distance. Obviously, clubs are the best way to find the best routes. You'll find to your delight that one can ride all twelve months in this area. We have winter storms, to be sure, with snow, sleet, ice. But our storms tend to move on through followed by a warming period. After your area, our winters will seem quite mild. Summers can be brutal........last week (Monday, Aug. 4th), I did 40 miles, with a temp of 105 (heat index 109) at the finish. I carry lots of water! It is not unusual to go through 100+ ounces of water on a summer ride, in addition to cold fountain drinks from convenience stores. Autumn is the best riding here, many mild days in the 50-85 degree range, usually sunny with light winds. Autumn here extends into December. Good luck with your move! You'll like biking all twelve months. |
