Let's be clear though, most deals include 'sales tax'. In other words, you will NEVER see sales tax as a line item on an invoice for a new vehicle, because the excise tax is supposed to cover that.

Hi,
Now I am totally confused.
Can anyone tell me what should I pay in OK for a car which MSRP AND purchasing price are the same, let's say 20K. What taxes should I pay for this car? Let's say the dealer is on the planet Mars and has no clues of deals that "include 'sales tax'"
Thanks

New car? Probably around $800 tags, title and tax. Best way to know? Call one of the tag agencies in Oklahoma and ask. They can compute it for you.

Thanks, I think that's what I'll do pretty soon.
Actually, $800 sounds pretty good!

Oklahoma does not charge a sales tax on cars. Just the 3.25% excise tax. So, don't expect to pay 8% sales tax.
Texas, on the other hand, does charge a 6.25% state sales tax on cars. We bought our minivan in Texas for $9,900. Our tax was $618.75 plus the $53.50 registration fee.

I believe the charges to register a used car are higher than that of a new car. When we brought my VW here from KS in 72, we had to pay excise tax on the original delivery price, not on what I paid for the car. I believe that system was changed a few years ago. It used to be when a car reached a certain age, the tag fee dropped to $15. When my VW reached that age, they changed the rules. I think I pay something like $35 a year for a car registered 41 years! They have also added permanent other fees!

You pay excise tax on the factory delivered cost of the vehicle.
