Moving to area soon--any advice?
We may be moving to the Tulsa area in late May, due to a job change. We've looked at Jenks, Broken Arrow, Coweta and Leonard. (on-line, mind you.) We have two children, both elementary school age. What community do you think would be a better fit, considering schools, housing affordability, and activities? (Both are children love sports -- particularly T-ball/baseball, football and basektball.) Also, proximity to my husband's job in S. Tulsa near the I-44/Hwy 64 interchange is a consideration. A bit of a commute isn't a problem -- we're used to driving 20-30 minutes each way now.
Also, we're considering renting for a couple of months, to make sure my huband's new job works out before buying. Do any of these communities have a good pool of nice, affordable rental homes (preferably not apartments)? What's a good resource for seeing what's available? How is the housing market down there? We're currently in the Springfield, MO area and while the market has softened a little, prices haven't really come down at all.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

The area just south of that interchange would be in the Union school district, which is a good school system. I'd look at housing straight south from there, say from just south of 71st street between Sheridan and Garnet, and from 71st street south to 101st. There are a ton of nice housing additions in this area I've listed. If you go further west and get into the Jenks school system, the commute to hubby's work will be more of a hassle, unless you like paying tolls every day on the newer Creek turnpike. As you mentioned, Broken Arrow would also be a good choice, nice easy commute in from the broken arrow expressway, especially since it's been widened over the past few years.

Hi....I'm a Tulsan to Californian Transplant lived in Tulsa from 1954-1976 and 1988-1990 ....Broken Arrow , Coweta , Leonard are a good match for your husband if his Job is in South Tulsa , wereas Jenk would place you into
some heavy commute traffic well on a Oklahoma Scale at lease.
(A) Coweta and Leonard are great (rural) areas which means that you can get more "Bang For Your Buck" , get a great house with some fantastic
"Acreage To Boot" and if your husband is working in (South Tulsa) far extreme Southeastern Tulsa County is far less densely populated as
opposed to (South Tulsa).
(B) Broken Arrow is more of a "Edge City" or Suburb than rural and is also rated as one of America Safiest Small city or suburb , which has great quality of life amenities such as schools and sports opportunities. I am familiar with
Broken Arrow and Leonard and Coweta because of attending Northeastern
State University in Tahlequah Oklahoma....Muskogee and Tahlequah could be
options also.

Really before we can answer we need to know size and price ranges you're looking at. Everything you're asking for is availablel in every community you have listed. I paid less a little over $100,000 for a little under 2,000sq ft near woodland hills mall. Plenty of people move further out but from what I've seen, most of them opt for new construction and pay $200,000 for a home my size and a longer commute.

Wow.. $100,000 2,000sq ft home near woodland hills mall. I guess I should have consulted with sgrizzle prior to buying my home... If you don't mind me asking when did you buy, what year was your home built and did you have to do any major repairs or improvements.
My Realtor certainly did not show us any such jewels for anything less than 130K near woodland hills with that kind of sq ft... and those homes where all fixer uppers! What gives?? However we did see several nice homes built around 2000 in the price range of 150 to 180K. Do I feel a bout of buyers remorse coming on, my wife has already threaten to clobber me if she finds out we paid to much. Well I guess I have a few more nights to be sleepless in Seattle worried about this sort of stuff... soon will be in Tulsa to judge for our selves.

Email or DM me the particulars (usually the address is enough....I can pull tax records and market data from that) and I will take a look at it. This is not a solicitation for business, but just an offer to help you feel good about what you have done (or get clobbered).

I am from Broken Arrow and the area is growing quickly. I graduated from Broken Arrow and got a great education. If you have any questions about BA, please ask.

Being from Broken Arrow, can you give me some insight on this town. My son will be going to Tulsa Welding School in the fall, and we've never been to that area. We are planning a trip next weekend, we're from a small south Texas town with a population of 1800. Big shock, definitely country bumpkins. My son and a couple of friends have decided to find an rv park and set up trailers rather than to rent an apt when we don't know where it's safer. Like I said we will be touring when TWS has open house next weekend, any suggestions?? denam

I am not sure about an RV park but I can say Broken Arrow is the safest area in Tulsa. It is nationally recognized for being safe and it is known for being an overall, great place to live. The quality of life here is good. I hope you enjoy your visit to the Tulsa region. There are some real emerging areas of Broken Arrow around the Broken Arrow expressway near the new Bass Pro Shop.
