Default Where to live in Muskogee?

Hi, we will be moving to Muskogee in a couple weeks from Nevada and have no idea about where to live there. Someone we talked to mentioned that we should avoid the "West Side" Being in a safe neighborhood is our top priority. We have 2 preschoolers and one on the way and I would like to be near a good park as well. Also, we need a rental house until we get acclimated to the area but anything we can find is insanely cheap. Is everything cheap like that or is there nothing to rent worth living in? We are having a hard time finding a place. We called all the "Muskogee Assoc. of Realtors", the Phoenix Classifieds, and checked out Craigslist and came up with 4 houses to check out that I don't know if we can live in. Any resources I'm missing? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hi, maybe I can help you. I was born in Muskogee and raised around that area, I currently live in Wagoner, which is near Muskogee. I think it is good advice to avoid the west area, with the exception of one neighborhood in that area. There is a nice, upscale neighborhood around the Honor Heights park area, it is off of west Okmulgee St, across from Muskogee Regional Medical Center. Some of the people who live in this area are doctors, nurses, etc and work at the nearby medical facilities, there is also a VA hospital near this area. I am sure most of the houses are in the six figure range. My uncle lived in this area before relocating out of state and he really liked it.

Honor Heights park is a beautiful park honoring veterans. It features ponds, walking trails and Azalea flowers, among other flowers. Each year, the Azalea festival is held at the park, it is kind of a garden festival and attracts photographers, gardeners and all types of visitors to the park. There is also a museum nearby called the Five Civilized Tribes museum, which features Native American artwork.

There are also many nice neighborhoods on the east side of Muskogee to the east of York St. These homes may be a little smaller though than the ones you would find in the Honor Heights area. The Muskogee Country Club area is also a nice area to live in.

I hope this has helped. Muskogee is a small city, so homes there are probably going to run a little less expensive than places like Tulsa or Oklahoma City. I don't know much about the schools there or how they are these days since I don't have any kids. It is mostly a friendly place to live, there is some crime there, but that is everywhere these days. There is not much to do in the way of entertainment, except for a few movie theatres and a mall downtown, so for anything special, you will probably have to travel to Tulsa, which is about an hours drive.

Websites I would reccomend are:
www.muskogeechamber.org
www.cityofmuskogee.com
www.homestore.com --you can find Muskogee homes for sale by typing in Muskogee in the search engine

I was wondering if you could elaborate on your message about living in muskogee. I am moving there in three weeks from out of state and trying to find a safe apartment for myself and my wife. I am thinking of contacting the local police department and chamber of commerce. Do you know any apartments by name that are particularly safe?

Hi,Before my younger sister bought a house, she lived in Raintree apartments with her husband and son. I used to visit them when they lived there and always thought that they were pretty nice apartments. They were usually pretty quiet and always seemed well maintained. The neighborhood is also a nice area to live in Muskogee. My older sister lives in a house in this same neighborhood with her family and she seems to like the neighborhood. She is a hospital administrator and works in the Muskogee area. It seems like a pretty nice area from what I have seen. You might also call the local police department or chamber of commerce. I am sure they would be happy to help you and could probably provide some good information on crime statistics, schools, etc.Good Luck!

Avoid the west side for housing. The east side is the safer choice. Also there is a private school excellent for education called St. Joseph Catholic School. I had one child graduate from there and the two youngest child have attended there all their school years. You need to check them out. thanks
