Does anyone know how the middle schools are for band? My kids have been in band for almost 3 years. They play percussion. In fact, my daughter started a drumline class after school this year.
We are considering Broken Arrow schools but I wonder which of the middle schools is strongest in their band program.
The Bands of America Grand National Championships is recognized as the premier marching band event in the nation. Ninety bands from across America will participate, including some of the finest, most progressive bands in the activity today.

The Pride of Broken Arrow Marching Band has long been known to its fans as “the grandest band in all the land.” Now that description is officially true. The Pride was crowned as high school marching band’s 2006 national champion after winning the most prestigious marching band competition in the nation: The Bands of America Grand Nationals, held at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana that featured 92 of the nation’s top high school marching bands from 25 states throughout the United States.

The marching band is a volunteer organization that is open for audition to anyone in the 9th through the 12th grades. The "Pride" meets after school for rehearsal and performs at home and away football games as well as various State, regional and national marching band contests. The "Pride" was named the recipient of the John Phillip Sousa foundations' Sudler Shield in 1999. The band has also been a finalist and Grand Champion at several Bands of America regional Championships.
The concert bands in Broken Arrow have long been a driving force of the program. With more than 50 Oklahoma Secondary School Activity Association Sweepstakes awards, they are recognized as some of the top Wind bands in the State. The various concert bands have performed at the Oklahoma Music Educators Convention on several different occasions. The school band program also has produced several State champion Jazz Ensembles, Winter Guards, Percussion Ensembles and numerous district and State superior rated solos and small ensembles.
Each year the graduation class from the Broken Arrow band have accumulated scholarships in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. In addition to the work of the staff and students, the program recognizes their parent organization as the strength behind the band. The boosters organize and run the fundraising efforts for the bands all the way from car washes and football game concessions to working the local Fair Meadows horse races and the PGA's US Open one year. The parents volunteer their time for hours of credit so that they can chaperone the bands on their various trips. The parents also organize events outside of the "regular band" events where they are paid for their work. Those monies are deposited directly into their student's accounts. The Broken Arrow bands enjoy rich traditions and great support from the Parents, School Administrators and the Community.
No, I know how good the high school is. I specifically was wondering about the quality of the bands on the middle school level and how they compare to each other.
The music and athletic programs are vertically integrated. Middle School band directors are involved in the Pride every much as the Senior High Directors. When my daughter was in middle school, her band director was the horn line director for the Pride. I don't think you will find a mediocre music department anywhere in the district.
It is the same with football and basketball. My son began playing in 3rd grade (I think) and his "camp" coaches were coaches from the middle, intermediate, and senior high campuses as well as the typical volunteer coach.
Okies take this stuff seriously.......I doubt you will find a bad program anywhere in the state.
Thank you so much! That was exactly the info I was looking for. I definitely am very aware of how serious Okies take their high school bands/sports. I was born in Tulsa, raised in Sand Springs. I remember the rivalry between Charles Page H.S. and Broken Arrow, especially between the bands. That was a very long time ago though and I do believe that Broken Arrow has far surpassed Sand Springs in the band department.
I attended Childers Middle School and we always did well. I do not think there is a bad one out of the 5. Scott Tomlinson (Director of Instrumental Music for BA) does a great job making sure all the middle schools are doing well because that affects his band, the Wind Ensemble - one of the top concert ensembles in the state.
Childers is on the south side of the city. There is a lot of growth that will occur there over the next 10 years.
Centennial is on the North and that area has experienced a lot of good growth as well. The others are in between.
You will find Broken Arrow to be a great community.
