Current Unemployment Rate?
Does anyone know what the current unemployment rate is for Tulsa? Has the recession been wreaking havoc there?
Thankfully, DH and I are both still employed, but our area has started suffering from the recession. The town I live in~Jan, 2008, our unemployment rate was 2.8%. The lastest stats have us at 6.4% and that's a few weeks old and a few lay-offs later.
How is Tulsa doing?

The last one for Tulsa I remember hearing was for December; it was 4.9 percent. It was 2.9 percent in April of last year.

That's not bad at all unless things changed quickly like they have here. How did you guys manage to avoid all this recession stuff? My gosh, some places have double digit unemployment and that's awful.

We didnt have a lot of speculation, over built housing, etc. We were just coming off some tough times earlier in the decade and are/were starting to build up some economic steam. Our economy has finally diversified after successive boom/bust cycles when we relied too much on oil. Plus the high oil prices last year really gave our economy a boost.
Tulsa has become kind of the tortoise, versus other cities hare. Slow and steady, quality over quantity. Population hasnt boomed, but wages and home values are still going up even now. Our banks were conservative as well. Plus having been through some really hard times with those busts, our companies are fairly lean, mean, and conservative. We know very well that good times end and you better be prepared for it. We have been watching the rest of the country build, borrow, boom, and over spend like a bunch of idiots,,, its been like watching a slow motion train wreck while we just keep on truckin along.

Per capita personal income figures will be released the first week of May. From the preliminaries, Oklahoma faired very well in 2008. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until next year to see Tulsa's 2008 figures.
I created a formula that can guestimate Tulsa's 2008 figures, however. Once the May figures roll out, I will post them on here. I have no doubt Tulsa will perform well for 2009 for per capita income.

Very interesting. We didn't see a huge boom or huge increase in the cost of houses either so, in a way, it was surprising that we're feeling the recession a bit here. It's nothing like many areas of the country, but still..... Guess we have several industries that are so tied to the rest of the country that if they're not buying, we have nothing to produce and sell.
I was just curious cause I still think that we may end up in that area some day. We both like it down there and it'd just be much easier since your economy is doing well. DH isn't much of a mover so he's posing a bit of a problem. , but I even have the area of Tulsa picked out that I want to live in.
Grove is still the place we'd love to relocate to and if I would encourage it, DH would be packing right now. The only problem is that he'd be in a position where he could settle for part time work, but unfortunately, I need an area where full time employment is available and Grove just doesn't seem to fit into that category. Bet I know where we'd spend our vacations though.

Grove would actually be idea. I read the Tulsa World on occasion and some crime stories are kinda scary. Nothing unusual for a city~just different from the smaller towns, ya know. I also found a map of the zip codes and a crime map. Just different in the larger cities so I'll have to be looking around at the more medium sized towns.

Check out some of the smaller cities in Southern/Eastern Oklahoma Jammie. It appears that Ada, Oklahoma (where I was born) has a plethora of jobs. It's a nice little community, with a University and is the headquarters of the Chickasaw Nation.

Housing is reasonable there as well.
