My husband may get a job there. It is up in the air now ???
Are there any specific areas in Tulsa that are mixed racially, low crime, family friendly, nice overal (we may get an apt. initially).
We want to be able to put the kids in activites ie: the Y, etc.

Great new YMCA in west Broken Arrow...
Great part of town and extremely low crime.

Is that part of town.....
Broken Arrow, is this a pretty multicultural area? What is it like?
I don't like the "this part of town", that part of town" mentality. Where we currently live, it is very racially mixed and it is nice. The whole racism thing makes my stomach turn.
Is there a website where I can find out what things there are to do in Tulsa?
Does Tulsa have many cultural things to do ie: Ballets, etc., especially for families?
Any nice homes to rent in the Broken Arrow area? We may decide to rent a house for a while instead.
Thanks.

Raelyn28 -You will love the Tulsa area...with a positive mindset. My husband, 7yr old daughter & 4yr old son live in Owasso. We moved here 6yrs ago, because of my husband's job. I was from the East coast and was not happy about the move. I actually cried! My visions of Oklahoma were cows & lots of flat land (NOT my idea of fun).
Here were the first surprises for me, about suburban Tulsa (specifically Owasso):
The first thing people want to know is "What church do you attend?". Not, do you go to church...they just assumed. The bible belt was real!
Their 6th-8th graders are seperated from everyone else. Each grade actually has their building, on their own land. They are called centers, like the "Sixth grade center".
There were almost NO minorities in Owasso! I STILL dislike this. One of my biggest fears is that my children will be racist, so this bothers me.
There are actually well-breed (classy) people in Oklahoma! Yeah, it's stereotypical that I thought all of OK were farmers/cowboys. I'm not saying that there are no "I've never been on an airplane" people in OK, but there are world travelers also.
For Goodness Sake- BECOME an OU or OSU or TU fan & buy a boat! When you pick your team, you must be willing to KILL for that team. These people are serious about their OK teams! As for the boat, it's a subculture. In the summer, people will head to "the lake" every weekend. They NEVER say which lake...it's always just "the lake". We've never had a desire for "the lake", but you may want to.
I've actually only met 5 Owasso born people. Almost all of my friends are from somewhere else.
If you are not doing Private School, I would go for the suburbs. Well, there are some interesting Tulsa charter schools that are almost like private. Tulsa is an interesting city & I like to visit weekly (only 15 min to the mall!) I have grown to love Owasso, so I believe that you could also. Good Luck & hope to see you at Merritts one of these days!

I was thinking the same thing! I am definitely not the cowgirl type!

Did you find Tulsa to be pretty multicultural? We definitely want to live in a multicultural area/ neighborhood, even if our time there is short-lived.
Thanks

Tulsa is very multicultural. I think that you should worry more about living in an area that is safe with friendly people than multicultural. I am tired of everyone trying to be PC!
Look up Tulsa in Wikipedia and see if you can find where it would not be multicultural.
Honestly people? Do some research! Tulsa is in the heart of Native American country. There are all different ethnicities in cities over 150,000 people.

I was talking to an administrator in the Broken Arrow High School and asked about Spanish classes for people who spoke Spanish as their first languages.....his response was that because they have nearly 40 different first languages attending their schools they just have a really good ESL program.

I truly appreciate your post here and the encouragement. Moving is always hard and we are moving a long way. We have lived in the PNW for the past 20+ years and there is a beauty here that will truly be missed. I was very fortunate to have been able to enjoy all three states on the west coast (California, Oregon and Washington). Well.. now it is time to move away and return to my roots. I was born and raised in Nebraska and Tulsa is much closer than the PNW.
I will miss the ocean and the mountains but I am sure that Tulsa will have many things that are missing here. Every place has positives and negatives. I have learned from moving so much to take in the good with the bad and enjoy each and every place. You never know how long you have in a certain location before it is time to leave and go somewhere else.
With that said, I am truly grateful that you shared your story with me. The words were very encouraging and extremely timely...
Thanks
