PLEASE, need some apartment help as soon as possible
I just accepted a job in Tulsa and I need to move in by July 13. I have been searching for apartments during the last 48 hours and I have had very little luck. I am in need of some help from Tulsa residents.
I am looking for an apartment that is less than $550. I know that limits my choices, but I am a no-frills person. All I want is an air-conditioned apartment where I can eat and sleep. I don't care if it's an efficiency or a one-bedroom apartment. I also want it to be in area where I don't have to regularly worry about my car being broken into or keyed. I will be working downtown on South Frankfort, but the commute doesn't really matter. As long as it isn't over 30 minutes, I am fine with it.
I am running into some major problems, though. I know one person who lives in Tulsa and he says that I should stay away from the north part of city. Unfortunately, most of the apartments in my price range are located in this area. Also, all of the apartments in my price range on craigslist are in the north part of Tulsa. I have searched all of the apartment websites and almost ALL of the apartments have bad ratings. I realize that people usually post when they have bad experiences, but I don't want to take chances when they say there are roaches, ants, long periods to get things fixed, and vehicle break-ins.
I am sorry if I am being to selective, but I figured that there could be a least one or two complexes that fit my description. I have been told that Bixby, Jenks, and Broken Arrow are nice areas. What about Sand Springs, Owasso, Sapulpa, and Catoosa?
If you could, please mention some specific names of complexes that might work. Or at least point me in the right direction. I am on a bit of deadline, so I would appreciate any help as soon as possible. Thank you very much in advance.

Depends on what you've labeled as 'North Tulsa'. North Tulsa isn't necessarily anything north of I-244.

Well, I am just looking for an apartment below $550 that is in a safe area. If there are safe areas that are north of 244, I am happy to look at them. I just need help because I will not be able to look at these areas. Thanks in advance.

This is a good area of Tulsa and looks nice and meets your budget:
One bedroom/ one bath $459
Another one close to downtown:

Anyplace can be undesirable, even South Tulsa. It depends on who you rent from. I don't care if you live in Jenks, if you rent from ANYPLACE that accepts section 8 housing grants, you're going to have trouble.
This isn't meant as a stab at the fine upstanding people who truly need the section 8 assistance, but as a rule of thumb, where section 8 housing is, is where alot of the crime happens. I've lived in apartments that converted to offering it and it went downhill in a hurry.
That's my two cents. Ask the complex first if they accept section 8. If so, look elsewhere.

Hey CC,
I sent ya the PM check out areas in South Tulsa near Woodland Hills Mall, since you said you want a safe area but under 550, there's a bunch of 1 bedrooms under 550 in that area. Check out my posts I am moving in from out of state and the apartment I looked at the only complaints were regarding the apartment staff not the apartment themselves on apartment ratings. Maybe it's just me but I couldn't care about the apartment staff in ratings lol.
You only deal with them like once a month or rarely since that apartment you can set up automatic draft and the maintenance staff reviews have been great for that apartment. So I guess if you don't pay your rent or are the type to hang out at the business office then that may be a concern. But if your like me and rarely deal with the staff then it shouldn't matter. The leasing consultant I've been working with has been great and has answered all my questions. She calls me with any updates (I move in 7 days).
Also look at apartments in the 74133 zip. The reason I picked that one was cause it's gated, LOW crime ( http://www.tulsapolice.org/mapcentral.html), the mall area has had a few auto theft (which is expected at a mall) and within walking distance to bars, the mall, grocery stores, restaurants, Sams Club, Super Target, Dave & Busters, comedy clubs and sushi (I LOVE sushi!). If your like me and want to walk to places within a mile of your place instead of driving that area might not be bad. Only bad thing I hear is its REALLY busy on the weekends and holidays (well of course it's the retail district of South Tulsa) so walking will be better than driving down there LOL.
I searched for apartments for you with that 74133 zip with only studios or 1 bedrooms that were under $550. Here's the results:
Apartments for Rent in Tulsa & Vicinity | Apartment in Tulsa & Vicinity*
Hope that helps ya and I understand finding an apartment in a short period especially out of state or to a city you no nothing about, but if you call around you'll find a great deal.
Good Luck

Woodland Hills would put you in a lot of traffic and a lot farther from downtown !

The "Cherry St." (which is really 15th St.) area has some really cute apartments converted from old houses, hotels, etc. and the 1 bedrooms are in your price range. This area would be very convenient to your job as well. If you go to www.tulsaworld.com, then click on "classifieds," then "rentals," you'll get a search screen where you can enter your criteria. Use zip code 74120 in your search. Right now there is an ad for a duplex at 1632 S. Quaker for $475.00 per month.
Anything from 14th - 21st St. between Riverside and Jamestown is a decent area. Rather popular with the "arty" crowd.
Good luck!
