Any new intel about this?
I've already printed a map with all the stores mentioned here marked.
I'm thinking that I could probably drive to Whole Foods about once a month to get my supply of meat and freeze it. But what I really need to have nearby is a place to buy organic eggs. I consume a lot of eggs, so I need to have a store nearby (within a mile or two) that I can just run to once a week.

Please keep the info coming.

If you have a freezer, buy a side or quarter of a beef or a hog from one of the butcher places in the area. Walke Brothers in Claremore is pretty good, Four States in Big Cabin is excellent, Ralphs in Perkins is good, there is a butcher in Collinsville, in Avant, in Ramona..........these are all slaughter houses that buy local grass fed and produced beef pork and buffalo and sell it cut and wrapped in sides or quarters of beef and buffalo and whole hogs. Walke Brothers and Four States also sell by the pound, I'm not sure about the others.

As an option, you might call McKinneys in Yale, ask them who has stock for sale, buy the steer and have McKinney process it. He is one of the few that will do the slaughter in the field for a small surcharge, eliminating the stress and trauma of the animal being trailered and run through the chutes to the kill floor.....it makes for lots better beef, buffalo, pork, mutton or goat......even better than what you can get from the organic stores or shelves. He is who we use when we are ready to process one of our animals. It can end up running close to $2,000 for a good angus, angus cross steer by the time you get it processed and packaged. But if you consider you are talking about close to 800 pounds of beef that includes not only hamburger but rib eyes, roasts, T bones, filets, ribs, etc etc and that you can split the animal (and share the cost) with a friend or two, it works out to be far cheaper and better tasting and healtier than what you get at the supermarkets........even the organic ones.

For eggs, we have chickens, so we try not to buy any. I don't think there is a part of Tulsa that is more than 10 minutes from the country. As you drive around exploring areas stop off at feed stores (Atwoods, Coop, Orscheln Farm, TSC, etc and check their bulletin boards. or look for signs out in the country that someone is selling eggs. They will be LOTS better tasting than those "organic" things you pay a premium for at supermarkets.

FWIW, Food Pyramid and Reasors both carry a pretty decent selection of organic commodities.....even wally is carrying some stuff.

Thank you so much everyone. After reading about the things that they are feeding our livestock, poultry and farm raised fish I have kind of lost my appetite for anything other than organic. I will give some of these places a try myself.

Thank you for the great info. I'll be sure to contact those businesses. I prefer organically raised "critters" though. It's not about taste - it's about what is/is not in them. I prefer my "critters" the way Mother Nature intends them to be.

Hopefully those sources will have connections to organic farmers and we can work something out.

And, yes, a freezer will be on my shopping list.

I really wish there was a Trader Joe's or Fresh & Easy in Tulsa. They both carry a great selection of organic eggs at very reasonable prices. But, alas, it seems that neither of those stores are in Oklahoma yet.

I'm sorry, but just because it is labeled organic does not mean it's not raised without some factory farm techniques.

I prefer beef (and pork and buffalo and poultry) to be raised in small amounts, in an environment where there is a lot of varietal grass, good water, and no stress. That is how I raise mine, I don't use medication except where there is an indication of illness, I don't feed medicated feed. I do feed fly block (but not in the couple of months prior to butcher) simply because the fly's torment them so badly.

What I raise and buy may not be labeled "organic" but regarding what is in the meat, I will stack ours against anything out there.......we just don't pay the thousands of dollars to be "certified."


We had dinner at Meers the other day. They serve home raised longhorn burgers (burger is about the only way you can chew longhorn). Excellent flavor, and a busy restaurant. Took us 45 minutes to get a table Sunday afternoon, and this is in a town of 6 people with the nearest population center 30 or 40 miles away. They go through 90 head of longhorn annually. You cannot tell me that Trader Joes or any other national retailer can sell organic meat that is not produced in some sort of artificial environment....ie: factory farming.

I think one would be hard pressed to find 100% organic anything.

As a cancer survivor I am very cautious about what I eat and I believe that by eating free range eggs from chickens that have been fed as non-medicated feed and free range pork and beef you are going to get as organic as possible.

By buying your beef, pork and eggs from local farmers you will get a premium product while supporting your local OK farmers at the same time.
