Default Organic grocery stores in Tulsa area?

Hi, everyone!

I currently live in the Los Angeles area, but for several reasons, I'm seriously considering moving out of California. I just started looking into possible destinations and as of now Tulsa is at the top of the list.

However, I was disappointed to find out that there's only one Whole Foods Market. The main reason I shop at Whole Foods is for their organic beef, chicken & eggs. Basically all the organic animal-derived foods (I can get organic fruit/veggies and other things elsewhere at lower prices). Doing a quick Google search I found Akins, but it appears that they don't have a meats department.

So my question to the forum is: Are there any other places where I can buy organic beef and chicken in the Tulsa area?

I want to have more options about which neighborhood to live in, and not be limited to areas near Whole Foods. Surely there must be other grocery stores that offer organic meats...?

Thanks in advance, and look forward to the replies.

From when I was in Tulsa it didn't appear to be that hard to get around in. Tulsa is not as sprawling as one would think. I would look into the local farmer markets for vegetables, and at least look into the neighborhoods around wherever the whole foods market is to see if they are compatible with your price range and taste.

Most will be in the midtown area, but there are options:

There is the Whole Foods in the Brookside area. They were supposed to be opening a southside location before the economy went bust. That seems to be on indefinite hold.

Besides Whole Foods, there’s Petty’s Fine Foods, a very good local upscale grocery store in Utica Square, very similar to Whole Foods, they do have excellent organic meats. Downside is they are in a very expensive area of town and really not very far from Whole Foods.

There’s Center One Market and Allen’s Fine Foods, which are two small very upscale grocers. But also are in the Brookside area with Whole Foods. I’ve not been to Allen’s, but Center One has excellent organic meats, better than Whole Foods

Harvard Meats is probably what you are looking for. It’s a very good organic Butcher near TU, but also pretty close to Whole Foods.

There are organic stores in other parts of town, but they aren’t very good. Natural Farms is small decent organic and nutritional supplement store, they have two locations one south and one near TU but have a very limited meat selection, all frozen. I haven’t been to Akins Natural Foods in years. I don’t care for it. They have two locations one south east and one in midtown

Reasor’s and Food Pyramid are two good standard grocery store chains, both have large stores all over town, both have good selections of organic foods, but be aware, the stores in the better parts of town will have better selections than stores in rougher areas. Both stores don’t really carry much organic beef, but they should have organic everything else.

There are also farmers markets during much of the year in different locations all over town, plus in the suburb of Bixby there are several year round permanent farmers markets selling locally grown and prepared foods, but no meats.

You can get organic canned items at grocery stores. I know that Walmart has a selection that is growing as more and more in OK begin to see the value in these sorts of foods. As a general rule, though, the "organic health food craze" has not hit OK like it has the east and west coasts. We eat exclusively organic and fresh grown, but we are by far the minority...only ones in our group of friends and they think we're a little strange. It doesn't bother me....just a fact.

I drive to Whole foods for fresh meats and things i can't get elsewhere. I was shocked to read here that there were any other options. I live in BA which is every bit of a 30 min. drive to Whole Foods. I go there once a month to get the things I need, then get everything else at Walmart or occaisionally Food Pyramid though their prices are higher than WM.
I'll try some of these other options...you learn something new every day! ha!!

Natural Farms has organic meats, multiple locations, and I've heard that is where Harvard Meats gets their product. There are also multiple Farmer's markets that operate one day a week.

Thank you so much for all the great info!
Wow, looks like actually there are quite a few places. Weird they didn't come up on my first google search... I hope they have websites. If they don't, I'll have to call them up to confirm they carry organic beef, chicken and eggs. That's the main thing for me.

Now I have a few store names to Google and plot their locations on a map. That should keep me busy for a while.

You guys are great!!!

That's interesting. I've not been to their north side location, do that have fresh meat there? The one out south doesn't.

I know people that do their weekly food package and like it.
