Many of the folks here in Texas head up North into Oklahoma (usually Broken Bow or the Ouachita Mts) for vacation, especially in the Summer when it's hotter than h*ll down here.

Tulsa Trips
When we moved to Tulsa from Houston, we made a pact to visit all the state parks and all of the areas, hopefully without returning to one before we had hit them all!
We found the travelok.com website to be very helpful. We'd pick a weekend, search through the 'events' then figure out where we were going!
From Eagle/Loon watch in Gore, bat watching out west, Indian pow wows, and a reenactment of the Land Run, it's been a hoot!
And everything is so close! And so diverse - hills, desert, lakes, forests, we love it!
And cities - just go to a city and stay for a weekend. You can make a list of things to do and never get to it because there's so much more!

Yeah you're right nameless i haven't been through Albuquerque New Mexico in such a long time , you see my Aunt died in Tucson Arizona and we never travel the Southern Route anymore......My wifes family lves in Minneapolis/St. Paul and Milwaukee Wisconsin so we go that northern Route whenever we come out (East) and the last time i came back that way we didn't even stop in Oklahoma , mainly because i wasn't driving our car...but helping some other relatives on my wife side drive out to Milwaukee , so ours pit stops were Reno...Salt Lake.....Omaha....Des Moines....Chicago...Madison Wisconsins...Milwaukee

Hello Billtown, Our personal favorite is Turner falls, in Davis Oklahoma, (the Arbuckle Mountains.) They have hiking trails, caves, beaches, water slides, camping and the kids have a great time. This has been our favorite vacation spot, besides Massachusetts.

The Grand Lake of the Cherokees may be what you are looking for. We have taken many one day trips around Oklahoma. Will Rogers Museum is in Claremore. S equoyah's home, Alabaster Caverns, Glass Mountains, Talimena Drive, Cowboy Hall of Fame in OKC, an Aquarium in Jenks, OK. Lots to see. Try this sight: OklaTravelNet

Lake Eufaula is a wonderful place to visit. Sometime you really need to take a break for the weekend, bring the RV or the tent and come see us. Yes it is a local State Park but we have some really nice smaller beaches without the HUGE traffic, expense, and OMG GAS COST of trips to places like Corpus.

so glad to find this thread. thanks! this has been my question to since moving here from northern california where we were spoiled with lots of fun day trips/weekend trips. we tried grand lake and i think it would be fun for adults and families with older children and if you were into boating. not great for families like us with very young kids though. it was flooded when we went in the fall but there were no beaches anywhere and i didn't feel like chasing my 1 year old and 5 year old (particularly my 1 year old) around on a boat.
