They showed clips of the program and he was teaching (English, not history) -- not fooling around -- and apparently he's the one grading the papers. The students were doing required work and the camera situation seemed fairly unobtrusive. There is another teacher in the room with Tony; apparently the pros' critiques of Tony's ability or lack thereof is another focus of the show. I would like to know that the kids had the ability to opt-out if they, or their parents, didn't think this was appropriate for them and that wasn't mentioned. But in what I saw I, this program and Danza's motives for doing it didn't seem suspect to me.

In a rather lengthy review of the program in Salon magazine, Aaron Traister gives it a mixed review. He said he was prepared to hate it, but didn't. "It's oddly endearing, because for all of Tony Danza's classroom and social failings, I don't doubt his sincerity in wanting to do a good job. I also get the sense that he showed up every day ready to work, which strikes me as unusual in the pantheon of celebrity do-gooder reality shows. But 'Teach' also has terrible drawbacks. While most reality TV shows deliver their message with the subtlety of a hammer to the head, 'Teach' seems unsure of its message, as though the show still doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up."

If being unsure of its message is the most terrible drawback of a "reality" program, I guess I might have to check it out. If for no other reason to support Tony in looking like an actual 60-year-old, rather than a dyed and plasticized one.
wish i could rep you--well said

Wow, he's lucky to be alive, isn't he? Being in good physical shape musta been the difference between living and ending up like Sunny Bono?
I remember when it happened they didn't think he would live glad he did. He use to be a dancer also and he used dance in part of his therapy when he got able.

I'm looking forward to watching if for nothing else it is bringing awareness of the low education we have in our country.

Just an FYI, he got his college degree many moons ago. He didn't "just" go back to school for it.

Okay, with that being said, I'm watching the show right now. So far, so good. He seems to be very sincere, very caring about the students. It seems to me that this was his lifelong dream and it's finally coming true for him.

I like the fact that the principal let into him about this being serious and if he screws up, he and his production crew will be out the door.

I feel badly now about any sarcastic comments I may have posted earlier in this thread; however, as a parent, I am concerned about who is in my child's classroom. If this was my child's school, I would certainly be questioning this every which way I could and why a former TV star is being permitted to "teach" in my child's classroom with a full production crew in tow.

Wonder how many of you tearing him apart are actually parents; spouting nastiness while at the same time sooooo concerned about the children who are going to be on this show. LOL it's laughable. How disappointed many of you will be if/ when you watch the show and find out the kids in his class like and respect him and actually learn from him.

Congrats Tony for not only taking the time out of your life to get a teaching degree to teach the youth of today (gawd knows that's an under appreciated job), but for choosing to age like a normal person.

As you should, OMG. Anyone who has an ounce of brain should be speculative of the motives and consequences of a show like this. Sounds like Tony is doing an outstanding job though.

As for "ripping him a new one"....since when does concern for children become ripping someone a new one? Since when did saying time has not been kind to him construe meaness? Yes, it's great that Tony Danza marches to a different drum in Hollywierd but he still hasn't aged well. What's wrong with stating the obvious? Maybe you are not in the same age bracket Tony and I are in, canibeyou? I'm very grateful that Mother Nature and my genes have been kind to me. Guess I expect people of the about same age should all look more youthful than Tony does. I also did not rip him a new one, I was concerned about his health as I stated in the very first post.

If you think that is looking good for close to 60, let me know how you feel when you get there if you are not there.

some of us are there and do find the not ageing well comments mean spirited--can't you just be thankful that you think you look well(and don't you wonder what your friends are really saying)

Nope, except for friends I went to school with, every single person is amazed that I am not in my 40's. I got carded on my 30th b'day!

Stating the obvious is not meaning mean spirited. Some just have a little trouble dealing with the truth. I don't for one second not believe you are there, annie.
