I only just discovered this show (had a free DVD box set and had never watched it).
I don't have any BBC channels, just basic cable, so never saw it when it was on. I do enjoy Restaurant Impossible with Robert Irvine--I like to see failing restaurants and the horrible kitchens get a b*tch slap and turn things around. So all I have to compare Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares with is Restaurant Impossible.
Ramsay's show was enjoyable in that there is lots of cursing. Don't get me wrong, I don't need cursing. But when I see people running horrible businesses and making stupid decisions, as a viewer I wanted to curse them out many times. This Ramsay show--- every other word was f***ing this and f***ing that. I found that oddly refreshing; not sure why, but there it is.
But the problem is that this Ramsay show drrraaaaggggssss on. It's very slow moving. A lot of talking, and talking about the same things over and over. Once they established that the chef keeps his kitchen filthy, they can just move on without going over it again and again. Once they've established that the chef made poor choices in purchasing, or made a dish that wasnt good, they should just move on to the next thing he does wrong, or to teaching him otherwise. But instead, it's example after (boring) example of the chef doing the same thing wrong over and over again.
On the bright side, they don't redecorate the restaurant in Ramsay's show. That's the most annoying part of Irvine's show. I usually flick around when they focus on the decorating part. When I want to see remodeling, I watch HGTV. There's always some annoying designer who gripes about the budget and gets tied up doing some stupid art project for the wall and deosn't get the floors and table done.
The other thing that annoyed me with Ramsay's show is that he's there a whole week, and seems to get very little done or accomplished. In contrast Irvine stays in a restaurant 48 hours and gets a lot more accomplished, not counting the remodeling.
What the shows have in common, however, is that the owners and chefs learn how to run the place successfully, but then often revert to their old habits afterward. Some businesses just deserve to fail.
So if I had a channel that showed Ramsay's show, I'd probably watch it, but I would end up flicking a lot when it drags. I never would have paid for the DVDs though.

No. I have enough stress in my own job. I'm not entertained by watching people be screamed at by their boss.

I agree TracySam - all of Ramsey's cursing just livens up the show. He seems to be quite a character.
And I really dislike the focus on the remodel on Restaurant Impossible.

I don't enjoy the sreaming either...however he truly is trying to help people and obviously is very passionate about what he does for people.
Though I too often find him extremely rude/crass he does genuinely bust his butt helping others; a trait not many folks portray in life and./or on TV these days!
And I sometimes don't blame him with the food horrors he often finds...he has public/customer health and satisfaction in mind when he tries to "shock" many owners into reality...some call it "Tough Love".

I've only watched these 4 original episodes, all taking place in the UK. So not sure if he continues the cursing in the US version. I guess cursing in a British accent sounds more melodious and less crass
