While I sympathize with the plight of closeted homosexuals of that era, several posters here seem to be championing Bob Benson now and forgetting every aspect of the guy save his gayness.
He has some sort of undisclosed shady background, he got the SC job by showing up and pretending to have been hired, his resume was a pile of lies, he went about ingratiating himself with people in a phoney manner...and...lest we forget...he is at least an aider and abettor in the plot to kill Pete's mother and obtain her money, a scheme which failed because it turned out that she didn't have the money they thought.
And after helping to kill Pete's mother, he sandbagged Pete in Detroit with Chevy, and then stole his next new account which Pete had generated in California.
The dilemma of being a gay male in 1969 America hardly justifies his sleazebag criminal behavior.
I had forgotten about his boyfriend and Pete's mother--you're right--that does show a dark side although I don't know if HE knew the boyfriend really intended to kill her--
he might have just through a marriage and Pete would buy him off...
the issues with stealing accounts is something that happens--the problem is that he stole from someone INSIDE his own agency--
but I had forgotten how he sandbagged Pete--

NO KIDDING!!!!! Glad you are pointing out the obvious. His being gay is secondary to the fact that he's a complete and utter fraud.

But then again …
So is Don.
In a way, they all are frauds. What makes the show interesting is when they are actually being genuine and authentic. When Don is talking to Stephanie. When Don is dancing with Peggy. When Roger is holding his son. When Lane is sitting in his Jaguar trying to kill himself.
One other thing about this episode that spoke to me, anyway, was when Peggy, Pete and Don were eating at Burger Chef, and the parallels between that scene and when Peggy, Pete and Ted were eating together. It was interesting how the dynamics in both scenes played, how Pete is always odd man out with the creatives, and yet how Pete's loyalties can always be depended upon. You always think he's the one who will turn traitor, but he really doesn't.
Don did come out of his poor, white trash, bastard closet to a few people while Bob is still pretty nailed-shut
Don's callous attitude did shove his brother into suicide as well...
even if he intended to make amends later----it was too late by then...
so I think Don and Bob are brothers under the skin to certain extent...
Bob is just so eager to please it grates on the nerves -- which Don certainly is not...
I think it might be illegal for Don to wear those shorts. They were too too short to contain the legendary Hammaconda.
LOL, but a good chunk of the female population has already seen it.
