Hey Catsy Girl, that's a little catty! I think brava4 was referring to all the powerful men in the press who have had affairs. To assume that she herself has experienced a man straying is a little unfair, and definitely off topic.
Back on topic, does anyone else wonder if the other maid, the one with the typewriter is gone forever? Everyone else seems to wind up back at Downton Abby at some point, so it might happen?
I think back in those days they didn't know as much about paralysis and nerve regeneration. They may very well have thought he wouldn't walk again, not knowing much about nerve damage. As someone who has suffered from some nerve damage in the past(nothing so serious as spinal cord injury) I can say I my experience there was no improvement for quite a while and then, several month later, bam!, it all came back very quickly as the nerves regrew and connected. That may happen with Matthew.
and sensible, too. perhaps i should have added that. and no, i think the more mature, sensitive, and reflective the man, the less chance there is he will succumb to a momentary temptation. i'm almost seventy years old, am far from naive, was married many years, and have had long term relationships with several men over the years. perhaps i've just been fortunate; i'm sorry your experiences have obviously been different.
catsy girl
I'm pretty sure Brava was referring to the TV show and not personal experience!
Are you forgetting why he married Cora in the first place? He is human, afterall...

i think it's impossible to know if "powerful men in the press" are sensitve, reflective, or mature, since the public sees only the public image that is projected. therefore i assumed the comments were based more on personal experience or experience of friends. if that's not the case, there is no reason to take my comments personally; indeed they should not be.
regarding lord grantham's initial attraction/interest in cora, it seems that seeking a wealthy american to marry in order to have money to maintain the estate, carry on the family dynasty, was an accepted, common practice among the landed gentry of that period. it has been a bonus for them and their family that real love developed between them.
i feel one of the true attractions of this drama is the fact that the characters are dimensional and not necessarily predictable. as people are in real life, they have strengths, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities which are a part of the unfolding drama. also they are capable of change, which a story told over a matter of years can sometimes reveal. as an example, early on we see mary as aloof, arrogant, and enveloped in her own world of privilage. later we see she has feelings and is capable of extending herself for the one she loves. cora is portrayed as a loving wife and caring parent, but at the close of the war, is perhaps somewhat reluctant to embrace the changes that the world after war requires.
we shall see as we continue to view the unfolding story.
Who believes Patrick is really Patrick? You can learn a lot about someones life when your in a foxhole....seems like at least his voice would be the same. I don't think I would forget what someone sounded like.
Exactly. And you don't completely lose your accent in just a few years.
Part of me wanted the guy to actually be Patrick, but he was just too vague and shady. Plus, he practically confessed to being an imposter to Edith.
I like how this is a soapy costume drama, but I do have a beef with how fast the time is passing, especially since it seems like the characters don't interact with each other offscreen. Every time we see Branson and Sybil, it feels like they haven't spoken to each other since the last time we saw them (which may have been last year in show time.) Mary had been engaged to Carlisle for two or three years before the announcement was made public. There might be movement on the Bates/Anna front now that Evil Mrs. Bates is dead, but prior to this they've been in limbo for what, four or five years? If Anna was your friend, you'd be telling her, "Girl, he's never going to leave his wife. You need to end this now."

I just finished the first disc of Upstairs, Downstairs and I love it. Very much like Downton Abbey. Any other suggestions for miniseries kinda like those two?
These are not miniseries but if you're interested in stories that examine the relationship between the aristocracy and their servants somebody mentioned Julian Fellowes' "Gosford Park" and to that I would also recommend "Remains of the Day".
