On the topic DWTS...J R Martinez is the best I've seen this go round. Also heard Karina has made very bad choices of their routines...that affect the judging. But, J.R. is so gifted with talent...and personality....WE don't even notice the tech stuff.

Yea, but the judges do. I hope Karina studies up on the rules book......a mistake like that during the finals could cost JR the Mirror Ball.

I am not as familar with the show as many of you are. Do the contestants have any input regarding their routines? I mean since some of them have a little experience is it okay for them to say what steps they would like to do? Or do their professional partners do all the choreography?

I would think that the contestants wouldn't want to do anything the judges would feel was against the rules.

the professionals should and probably do know the rules. I don't see how the contestants could possibly know them though. And knowing the pros know the rules, I always wonder why they do things they know will make the judges freak out on em for.
Not sure about the input either but I doubt the pros would appreciate too much input.

Good points. I was thinking of contestants Jennifer Grey and Rikki Lake both who have had professional dancing experience so maybe people like them are aware of the rules of ballroom dancing. I used to watch the dance contests on PBS when they showed them and the judges sometimes explained the rules during the shows.

I could see why the professionals on DWTS probably want to do all the choreography in their own way but if their partner knows something like lifts aren't allowed I would think they would question the choice to do one.

It's not nice to **** off the judges. I suspect though that the "illegal moves" are done to impress the audience more than anything else.

I think the contestants do come up with ideas about the routines they do, make requests or suggestions, etc., but the pros get the final say and they do all of the choreography.

I can't come up with any specifics, but I have seen some give and take between the pros and the contestants during their practice sessions over the years.

The responsibility to follow the rules and do the dances properly though......is totally on the pro. How could a novice even know the difference between a "jive" and the "lindy"? They couldn't....that is the pro's job.
