In the meantime, I eagerly await the return of Timothy Olyphant in "Justifed" which IMHO is almost as good.

count me in as a huge fan of deadwood. I watch it every time they rerun the series. as others have said the language was meant to shock to add to the lawlessness of the town. every production value in the series is top notch, from the writing to the sets, and costume design, music. I guess everyone who was bored missed all the town politics and manipulation happening.

deadwood had drama, comedy, suspense along with some of the best actors. Robin Weigart's Calamity Jane was stellar. probably the best portrayal of calamity anyone has done. Ian McShane/Al has always been a wonderful actor as well as Powers Booth and the series alone is worth watching for their work. Timothy Olyphant played his character's conflict of emotion with a steely edge that was great to see. John Hawkes who played Sol went on to win an academy award last year.

the show is not everyone's cup of tea, if you love good writing, acting and story without censor you should love deadwood. a well worth watch.

I am the OP. It isn't about the children. I saw no production value in someone uttering @uck, @ucker and @ucking every other word. Maybe it was just the episode I watched but it seemed to overpower the rest of the dialogue.

It isn't as if I am a "prude", I am a former Marine and as such I was around a lot of Sailors- (You know how they are ). Even in the service the most foul mouthed idiots didn't seem to cuss as much as the characters on Deadwood.

I was hoping to be entertained by the program but turned it off after feeling verbally assaulted.

Not my idea of "entertainment".

You must not like Tarantino movies, either, then.

if the op was able to get past the foul language they would have found a well written, well acted series. the production values were outstanding.

I agree that the language was not necessary but after a while a person can train himself to ignore it.

I find that I get bored with a lot that tv offers. The shows, or many of them, that I end up really loving take some getting used to.

I loved, loved, loved Deadwood and wish they had continued with it.

Some tv series, not this one, seem to start out in the middle of the action and a person has to really be patient and attentive in collecting facts to put the thing together. I lose patience, but persevere and try not to fall into that habit, while watching the boring shows, of letting my attention slip.

It reminds me of when I was in school and had to be totally alert while the prof was lecturing.

There are many rewards in life for those who can concentrate fully.

Default Language in Deadwood

In that ten minutes time three different characters used "@uck", "@ucking" or "@ucker" at least 20 times What are these idiots thinking? Does that language enhance the story line at all? It was like some twelve year old who just heard the word for the first time in his life wrote the script.

What a waste of time Deadwood is. I am disappointed.
I did some research on the show, "Deadwood", the writers & producers went to great lenghts to get it right, the names of all of the characters were correct.
At that time, language in a mining town was very rough, the genteel didn't use the gutter language, but the people on the street did.

The first law made in Deadwood after it became a town was to outlaw profanity in public.

Here's another take. I read that in the Deadwood era using the word "damn" was considered as offensive as the "f" word is today. The writers wanted to use a modern term. I'm a Justified also. Love me some Boyd and Raylon. I have more trouble acclimating to violence in these excellent dramas than I do the swear words.

I'm no prude when it comes to language, but yeah, the profanity on Deadwood was soooo over the top that it was ridiculous. It slapped me out of the world and just made me giggle, which I'm sure isn't the reaction they were going for.

Justified is one of the best shows on TV. Love, love, love it. One of the best screen incarnations of Elmore Leonard I've ever seen.

By the way, fans of these two shows ought to check out the movie Rango. Tim Olyphant has a great cameo. Best scene of the movie.

For me Deadwood is simply gripping to watch, a snapshot into a time where villainy is merely a way of survival and the weak are left behind.
Of note is the superb dialogue, Shakespearian in it's elegance, most lines are delivered with a poetry unusual against a background of corruption.
