I said it was CREATED by Eric Monte in 1971 and he pitched it to Lear in 1973 leading to the start of the show in 1974.

Go to youtube and watch the true hollywood story of Good Times and you will find all of this out.

I don't agree with what THS or IMDB says. Once Florida was plugged in, it was a spin off.

Good Times (1974) - Trivia - IMDb
Try and understand. The Florida character was WRITTEN OFF the show so the actress Ester Rolle could star in a NEW COMEDY that had no connection at all to Maude since it was already created in 1971.

It would have only been a spinoff if the Florida character was WRITTEN OUT of the show which would have maintained the connection to Maude

I think the writers made a GOOF and forgot to change her name like they did with the husband on Good Times.

Eric Monte created the concept of both Maude and Good Times. Maude was created first as a spin off of All In The Family and Good Times was created as a spin off from Maude. It's irrelevant that Monte created the concept in 1971. The relevance is that when it came to the development of the concept, the egg came before the chicken. Good Times became a spin off from Maude as Maude was a spin off from All In The Family as Till Death Us Do part begat AITF. Creation/gestation/birth/upbringing. All logical.

A character does not have to be written out of a show for the new show to be a spin off. It simply has to include them. Whether a goof or not and regardless of when it was created, Good Times focuses on a character from a previously established series. Therefore, a spin off.

Can someone name one spinoff that included a character in a different city without explanation?

If you're using the question to bolster what you believe is the definition of a spin off then I think your understanding of the term is faulty. The simplest definition I can find is this:

"A spin off is referred to as a show that is based off of another show. A certain character may have been taken from a hit show and a new show would be created around that particular character, creating a spin off."

I can find no reference anywhere to indicate that a spin off by definition requires that the character upon which it's based has to be portrayed as living in the same city as it was in the original series. If you can find such reference(s) then please share.

Don't you have anything weightier to fret about than the fate of idiotic sitcoms?
