Her father abandoned the family when Kendra was four years old. Her mother had to work her butt off to raise Kendra and her brother alone. The grandparents helped as much as they could.
Kendra became depressed in high school, started hanging with the wrong crowd and tried to overdose on purpose.
Her mother has talked about how stressful their life was. Kendra's mom questioned on camera where you could find men nowadays that are polite and act like gentlemen. She felt Hugh Hefner was treating Kendra better than most men her age would, and that Kendra was at least safe with him.
(I don't agree with her that modern men aren't polite; I think it's a reflection of the men that were available in their socioeconomic group.)
Given what that family experienced, Hugh Hefner looked like a grand improvement over all that. And Kendra said Hef saved her life in a way, because she was going downhill before she met him.
You have to consider what Kendra came from.
