We all know that the media never accurately reflects the "real world". But you have to pick ONE TV network or show that most accurately reflects who we are as a society and a country, what would it be?
My pick would be CMT. (For those of you in California or Boston, CMT is Country Music Television, a subsidary of MTV)
It has a lot to with country music and its themes and the videos shown on CMT. The music and videos actually tell stories about real everyday people and experiences and emotions people can identify with unlike Laguna Beach or the OC. Also so much of it is filmed in the small towns of the heartland and the South where most Americans live. It might be foreign to people living on the fringe in New YOrk or LA but that's another whole story. CMT (and GAC) reflect the American experience and our culture and lifestyle today more than any other channel. Note that I say its only in comparison to other networks, not that everything you see on it is accurate. Plus, country music is the most popular style in the U.S. and the majority of us listen to it with the exception of immigrants, and they too will probably by the second or the thrid generation.
People in other countries think about American music and pop culture and they think rap videos and heavy metal. They get MTV all the time and learn about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. They watch videos where people in teh ghetto deal drugs, drive Cadillacs and get in chases and shootouts with cops. They think that's who we are. Its a shame that Europe and Asia get MTV but not CMT.
As for specific shows, nothing reflects the post September 11th world than my favorite show of all time, 24.
