My daughter competed in glitz pageants for a few years in her early teens. The saddest thing about this show is that Honey Boo Boo and her family are definetly NOT TYPICAL (at least in the northern states) . Most young pageant girls are bright, articulate and talented not like Honey Boo Boo. And, 95% of the parents are "normal" not crazy, attention seeking publicity junkies like her family.
I watched Honey Boo Boo and her Mom on a TV talk show and just cringed at how badly they acted and sounded. It really made them look like "southern white trash". I expected them to live in a double wide trailer in a run down mobile home park.
It is a sad commentary on America if this is what people watch on TV. I needed to take a cold shower and watch Masterpiece Theater to get those horrible TV images out of my mind.
This family is not typical in the Southern states either. I watched Toddlers and Tiaras once with friends and the people in the double wides that were loud and offensive were from Pennsylvania in that episode. So...I wouldn't say that only the South has "white trash". I really think these shows look for the exceptions not the rule. The louder and more rude the people are the better. More than likely most pageant families are nothing like the ones they choose to show.
After reading the comments here, I went to the TLC website and looked up this program. And then I fired off an e-mail to the parent company (Discovery Channel), telling them my opinion of this show. I believe the word I used was "appalling."
It won't make any difference, I know, but it needed to be said.

........ and that's the entire point of these "reality" shows. Do you think anyone would want to watch if everyone acted prim and proper and articulate and intelligent? It's all about the ratings and the trashier it gets, the higher those ratings go!!!
By the way, I saw the commercial for this new show today. I'm truly embarrassed for this child. Her parents probably think they're doing her a favor, making her "famous" and being on television. Hopefully, the money she'll be earning will be put in an account for her. I know the law is that only 15% of the child's earnings has to be put in an account but I hope that since they'll all be making money off it, that they' at least leave money in a blocked account for her that can't be touched until she's 18.
I wonder if the parents realize that people are laughing AT them and not WITH them??????

It may very well make a difference. You don't know how many people are writing in to give their opinion on this show. I'm going to check out their site, too, and send an email.
I happened to be relaxing one evening and flipped through the channel and say this precocious little child talking crazy called "Honey Boo Boo Child"
Has anyone else heard of her?? Is this the future America?? Heaven help us...this is RIDICULOUS!! And I found out she will be having her own show on TLC...sheesh
This thread was the first I've heard of Honey Boo Boo so I went to youtube and looked it up. Like a car wreck, I couldn't look away, but was appalled as well. How sad this girl is being raised this way.
This inbred little troll was originally on "toddlers and tiaras" and because of her hillbilly/redneck ways, she got her own spinoff.
Very sad. Her obviously uneducated and ignorant parents are allowing her to be exploited by a huge corporation for the sake of a few dollars. What they fail to realize is that America is laughing AT them and not WITH them.

Reason: Merged the two threads -- thanks.
Yes, making the South look ridiculous and ignorant is nothing new. The sad thing is that there are people willing to play along to make a buck. Ignorance is everywhere, and it is no more prevalent in the South than anywhere else.
I guess after Jersey Shore, Real Housewives of New Jersey, and Jerseylicious, it's only fair to come to the South. Here we go.....
