I remember an episode where Andy made too many dinner dates-all the same night, and all the women made spaghetti, and they all had the same "secret ingredient'', so that by the last meal, when the woman chirped ''and you'll never guess my secret ingredient'', he just groaned "OREGANO..."

Another Andy classic! The show opens up with Barney having his usual attitude problems while reading the paper. He carps about the security at the Mayberry security bank. To prove a point, he dresses up like a little old lady assigned to clean the bank, and winds up getting locked up in the bank safe. And eventually escapes by kicking in the wall and crawls through the hole and out of the beauty shop. GREAT!!!

I love Barney's bad pronunciation of words, like "therapetic"! He always meant well though, like the time he got the whole town together to save Andy and Helen stuck in the cave, while they were on a picnic. Or went on a wild goose chase to hunt for Opie in the woods and got himself and Gomer lost!

My personal favorite as a child in the 60s is "Lost In Space" which is also very family-oriented.

I too grew up in the 50's / 60's. Dr. Smith from Lost In Space always creeped me out. Don't know why but he did.

Anyone else like that show?

Another Andy classic- Floyd hiring Sarah Brown to be the manicurist, who was played by Barbara Eden.

I just watched this one last night. Season 2. I love how all the wives were so jealous. Barbara Eden is just as pretty today as she was back then, too.

My S/O thinks I watch these shows because maybe I want to go back and live in the past but the truth is, I like these shows.
Wish the newer shows were like this and not so stupid.

I agree that it has nothing to do with living in the past. There were just some really good shows back then, fresh and funny. I read an article about this once. The author's theory was that shows in television's relatively early years benefited from a willingness by writers and producers to experiment. The result was some really innovative shows, unlike later shows that play to a few basic formulas that producers have discovered over time are guaranteed to draw solid viewership. Makes sense to me.
I think the OP has dvd's of the best seasons. Maybe the fifth season was good as well. This show was of such high quality, though, that even in the later years, after much of the original cast was gone, and Andy's character turned into a grouch who was constantly irritated by having to solve problems for all the town's misfits, they still could come up with an occasional gem that had the feel of the early years. The episode referred to above, where Andy ended up having three spaghetti dinners in one evening, is an example. Another that comes to mind is the one where Warren, Barney's successor as deputy, had the idea to get Otis to stop drinking, by encouraging him to develop an interest in art. I found Warren to be a boring character, but this episode was an exception, as the show provided a humorous look at the old truism that a leopard doesn't change its spots, when Otis did get interested in art, but found that he produced his works of highest quality when he was "just a little gassed."
Great show. A timeless gem.

I just finished watching The Pickle Story. It is when Aunt Bee jars pickles for a contest, but they are nasty tasting so Opie, Andy and Barney switch her home made ones for store bought ones, because they don't have the heart to tell her, hers are bad. In the end, they were forced to eat hers. Funny!!
I watch very little TV, so I am really enjoying these. I am still on season 2.

Operation pickle switch,er, kerosene cucumbers. And Barney is promoting Mayberry's safe driving award to everyone who he stops on the highway. And Andy wonders where all the pickles went as Aunt Bee is pondering getting back in the contest, Barney proudly beams "They are scattered everywhere from Oregon to Nova Scotia!" This one is in my top ten-make it five. Long live Operation pickle switch!!!
