After watching season one on Netflix I bought the boxed set of the first four books, read the first 2, then watched season 2, then read the next two books, and now have the fifth book on order.
As other readers of the 4th and 5th books might say - it's certainly possible that the tv series will catch up to what Martin has already written during season 4.
So what I'm wondering is - will the tv series then branch out on it's own with an original storyline, or will Martin be pushed to bring things to a conclusion?
One reviewer who posted on Amazon estimated that at the rate Martin is writing (and at the rate he is being non-edited) it will take until 2037 for him to finish the story of the world he created in Game of Thrones.
I don't think most of us will be watching the same tv show for 26 years!
I've been glad to read and watch nearly simultaneously, as it takes both to really understand the storyline!
And I just want to say how beautifully cast the tv series is - all of the actors are perfect for their roles.
So what do you guys think of last night's season premiere? The opening scene was really good! I thought for sure Sam was a goner, glad he's okay.. for now
I read somewhere that one of this season's episodes was actually written by George RR Martin himself.. squeee! And that the TV version will kill off some characters sooner than the book to make space for newer characters.
I'm so glad this show is back... I haven't been able to find anything else on TV that can hold my long term interest (watched GRIMM and ONCE UPON A TIME but they turned into soap opera, what with love triangle and crappy story line so I stopped watching after season 1).
I'm good for this season and next (thanks to True Blood), then it's dry spell until next spring ...

Mad Men & The Killing ain't too bad on AMC. The Vikings is getting better on History Channel.
TV Guide mentions that some on the top end up on the bottom and visa-versa for GOT. Looks like
The "Dragon Queen" is on the rise.
Very impressive start of Season 3. Since Season 2 ended I have now read all the books, and it does give an additional appreciation for the backstory, but also for the TV producers' efforts to create a revised story that makes sense with fewer elements. I'm intrigued that the TV version doesn't quite follow the book plot, but remains true to the spirit of the story. I think we're in for a very enjoyable Season 3, and it will only take us half way through Storm of Swords! I hope that means we have years of GoT enjoyment ahead of us... And apparently Martin is working feverishly to get Vol.6 done before HBO catches up with him...
What a fantastic scene between Tyrion and his father. The "Imp" is becoming the most human of all the characters...And the actors know their roles and each other well enough now (and we know their characters well enough, too) that a small movement of the head, or a sideways glance, speaks volumes. That's great TV!
