Default Why are there so many stupid reality shows on every channel now?

Every channel seems to be nothing but stupid reality shows. TLC stands for The Learning Channel and all they show are stupid reality shows. History Channel used to show informative shows about wars, presidents etc now it's filled with lame shows about rednecks. CMT and MTV both are supposed to be about music but they rarely play music just reality shows... I think shows like The Bachelor, The Kardashians, Teen Mom etc are all trashy

Such a sad mystery! The dumbing down of America continues on. Trashy is what many want.

People like watching them. The channels are just meeting the demand.

They're cheap to make. Basically no writing/plot involved. No high-salaried actors -- just a host (maybe) and the people who've contracted to be in the show. Probably the reviewing and editing of all that footage takes the most time/money.

There are still some quality documentary-type shows on, but I'm sure that they take a LOT more time and money to produce, for fewer ratings.

This. Just look at Honey Boo Boo. TLC is paying that family just 20k per episode, and it's their highest rated show. TLC is making literally tens of millions off that family. Contrast to the cool 2 million Charlie Sheen was taking home for each episode of his show. Honey Boo Boo needs to hire Charlie's agent.

It's insane, i don't think they're a bad family at all, just rednecks. The thing is why would i want to sit and watch them??? I have no interest in watching them at all, i don't get the attraction.

Even with the ridiculous salaries that some of the judges make, some in the eight-figure neighborhood, these shows are substantially cheaper to produce than a one-hour drama or a 30-minute sitcom.

Plunging ratings for both AI & DWTS as compared to the previous two seasons won't change this trend either.

I admit some reality shows are pretty entertaining like American Idol but most others are trash.
