There was actually some scholarly "cultural studies" writing on the Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart shows as representative of a certain "Midwestern" sensibility on TV. Ive read that also in the context of comedy coming from the heartland in the 1970s: Bob Newhart, Johnny Carson, and Martin Mull.

But yeah, I was a big fan (actually my folks were too). MTM was part of that blockbuster Saturday CBS line-up:

All in the Family
Marty Tyler Moore
Bob Newhart
Carol Burnett

....with a few other shows in that line up, like Bridgit Loves Bernie.

Carol Burnett was the last of the old school variety shows, actually almost a bit of a throwback to live variety (as in vaudeville). Echt showbiz. Havry Korman was a hoot!
