Looking back through this thread, I noticed the absence of one of the very greatest TV Dads. I guess he's overlooked because he only had one child, and one of the people who lived with him addressed him as "Uncle".

There are several from the first list that I really like: Howard Cunningham, Mike Brady, Andy Griffith, Red Forman, and Danny Tanner. I also really like Alan Matthews (Boy Meets World), Johnathan Kent (Smallville), and Stephen Bartowski (Chuck).

But the topic is about best TV Dad. Not best fictional representation of an historic figure.

I read the series, and am well versed in the mores of the period.

But as far as TV Dads go, Pa Ingalls rocked.

I like Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. He reminds me of my dad.

Best television father?

Why, Harry Morgan, of course!

Andy Taylor.

IMO, he was the best with his down home, real-life, and practical lessons. And I loved the way he'd always humor Opie, especially in the earlier episodes when he was so young.

Best Grandfather: Albert "Pops" Solomon on "The Goldbergs." The voice of adult sanity in that family.
