I thought this was a good season, probably for some of the reasons that banjomike didn't like it: we started seeing more of the characters developed really quite well, and I don't just mean Doggett, although she was a standout. My wife commented that she deserves an Emmy nomination for this season.
I think the same is true with the escape story, Caputo's backstory, and the privatization plotline. In addition, they handled the Chapman character very well: her education, upper class background, and (frankly) whiteness set the viewer up to relate to her, but it's become very clear that she is not, in fact, a good person.
I do think there are some ambiguities, a la Game of Thrones, but for the most part I think we can follow the straightforward interpretation: Vee is definitely dead, for example, plus other things that would be spoilers:
Spoiler
Vause is clearly dead, right?
.
On the other hand, I wasn't crazy about the kosher food and conversion plot; I've never had any use for Norma as a character and I didn't think that plotline added much; and I really, really didn't like the final scene.
Will I watch it next season? Absolutely.
I'm thinking Yes to your spoiler question but . . I guess we won't know for sure until next season!
The best drawn characters on tv today; the smartest writing; a glimpse into the lives of the other half of society; a unique view into the hell that is American Prison; an appreciation of how imprisoning the mentally ill is useless and inhumane.
Oh and, I find it downright entertaining as well as touching, tragic, funny, jarring.
Thanks, but I got more than my fill of these things in seasons 1 and 2 and I'll pass on the rest of this season. The characters and storylines just aren't interesting and likeable enough to carry this series for more than a couple of seasons. There are plenty of better shows to watch.
I enjoyed s3, and was okay with the storylines not being quite as "high stakes" (having a particular inmate or guard as "super-villain") as previous couple seasons.
It did feel more like a prelude to (setting the stage for) s4, which of course will be a long time in coming, but am looking forward to that.
Having the careless (okay, they care about short-term shareholder profits) corporation be the "bad guy" made perfect sense to me.
I finally finished season 3 yesterday. I enjoyed it. I went into season 3 not caring one bit about the meth heads because I thought those 2 girls smoked their brains into tapioca. I ended up feeling a little bit for Angie. She had a golden opportunity to escape but in reality had nowhere to go. I even felt for Leanne after seeing her back story. Then went back to not caring for her at all when she turned into a crazy cult leader and bullied Soso into almost killing herself. And speaking of Soso it looks like she finally has a group. Hopefully Taystee and the rest of the sisters can get her to stop talking so freakin' much.
I'll say this much. I find it funny that Heally is a counselor for women when he's kinda messed up himself. That man has some kind of women issue the show has yet to address. We saw it when he locked Piper in solitary back and would have let Pennsatucky kill her in season 1 and we saw it again this season with him butting heads with Berdie.
Never liked Alex. If she's dead, so be it. You don't rat out a drug dealer and live.
And last but not least we have Piper. She has gone from being incredibly annoying when the show started to semi badass in this season's finale. What she did to Stella was so cold. That last kiss made me instantly flash back to Godfather 2 when Michael kissed Fredo. Did anyone else get that vibe?
We just finished season 3 today, and I am at a loss as to where it will go. Season 3 was so touchy feely after the first 2 seasons that I don't know what to think. It is so fascinating how the "bad" people become the "good" people, and the good people become the bad people. Call me confused.
I really enjoyed Season 3. I'm surprised people were upset that the focus wasn't on Piper as much. That wasn't the point of the book it's based on, and it's not the point of this series. It's supposed to be about women in a bad situation because they made some bad choices, and how they cope, learn, and grow--or don't. Personally I like seeing the back story of the different characters.
I also like that Pennsatucky became a more well-rounded character, rather than just a psycho meth head. The real Pennsatucky and Piper Kermin (sp?) were actually friends, so I'm glad her character is being given a fair shake.
Lee Ann: who knew the lamest character would turn out to have the most interesting backstory.
Red and Healey: I started clapping like a schoolgirl when I thought they would have a lil romance. Who knows? Maybe an old version of Daya/Bennett? (Red won't have to worry about getting pregnant at least).
And Bennett... Where did he go? I didn't like that they just left that hanging. (I guess the actor prefers his gig on How I Got Away with Murder.)
I actually felt bad for Pornstache and his inability to accept that Daya's baby wasn't his. He's been a screw up his whole life. This was the one thing he thought he could do.
Crazy Eyes! So happy she finally may have found love (even if it is with a girl as goofy as she is.)
I like Taystee as the "mom" of her group. She's street smart and book smart, and she's a good leader. Janae, Poussey, and Black Cindy need someone to keep them in line.
I also like how Black Cindy went from the kosher scam to exploring her own spirituality.
If this show was all Piper, all the time, it would be boring. Who cares about watching an uppity entitled white girl who got caught "being edgy." The other characters--that's where this show is at.
I absolutely love this show. I started watching it on Netfilx about a month ago. One thing I can never figure out is what did RED do to land her in jall? Did she burn someone's house down?
Really enjoyed S3 of OITNB. Great episodes - it's tough to compare it to S1 - S2 since I liked all three almost equally. This season was like the first two in that it combined drama & comedy quite effectively.
OITNB is very unique among TV shows/films because it portrays some of the imprisoned women in the most unglamorous appearance possible. Like everyone else, when I see women on TV/film they're almost always in make-up & dressed well, etc. (unless they're intentionally trying to dress down or look bad, like Charlize Theron in the disturbing film Monster).
However, some of the women on this show are literally unrecognizable from past roles. For example, in this season the actress Lori Petty (the short-hair blonde woman w/glasses) looked great back in the '90's in films like Point Break, Tank Girl, etc. Sure, it's been 20+ years since then, but she intentionally looks extremely rough on this show.
I liked the new back-stories for the characters (that we hadn't seen before), i.e.
Spoiler
Caputo, Healy & his alcoholic mother, Doggett & the abuse she suffered, the girl who had been Amish, the woman who wanted to go to college & run track, etc. These definitely made me feel sympathy for some of these characters, which hadn't been the case before I saw the back-stories...
I thought the

shank/knife made out of Jolly Roger candy was hilarious!
Laura P. as Alex Vaus was hot, even hotter than she had been in That '70's Show - the black hair & glasses really suited her in this series. I'm not usually into slender women, but she was gorgeous
Spoiler
Hopefully the character survives the attack?! that we saw in the S3 finale...
I liked how Soso
Spoiler
was finally able to find a group of friends to hang out with, even though the reasons for this were quite horrible - i.e., her new friends saved her from dying from an overdose....
I was disappointed that we didn't get a back-story in S3 explaining why
Spoiler
Crazy-eyes ended up in prison - she's one of my favorite characters, and the back-story we did get in the first couple of seasons was quite poignant (i.e., showing her not fitting in with her adoptive family, etc.)
Side-note: Was extremely amused at the young goth woman in S3, who had one of the best lines: She said, "You know I'm just wearing that apron ironically, right?!" to her friend, when she was trying to justify how she was able to work in the kitchen even though it was "beneath" her. Hilarious! She was still trying to be a "hipster", despite her circumstances/situation...
