I think what this is trying to portray is that good and evil are relative. Good people can do bad things, but that does not make them bad people. Everything is gray.
I don't agree with that, but I do theorize that's what this is about.
Yes, I agree, there is much more to it than simply a Detroit stereotype.
We first see Frank emerge from his house on a street of nicely kept homes. The road separates his house from the burnt out homes and empty lots (thin blue line?). Then we see him pick up the bottle from his lawn. This tells us that the decay, or criminality, is creeping into his world.
I watched it again last night - it is a much better show when not watching it right after Breaking Bad.
You all have made good points. I probably missed some of the finer points of the show. I was holding it to a high standard, but was actually a bit distracted, and was still thinking about BB. Also, most shows get better from the pilot. I'll have to re-watch it.

I think I'm going to watch it on another night too. I was really hyped up after BB (felt like I had taken some of the blue stuff, lol) and it was just too much of a downer.
The character that interests me most right now was the guy tearing up little bits of paper at the bar...the cop drama, not so much.

I know that feeling!
I understand why they would put it after BB, but it some ways it may hurt it. I very much want a show set in, and filmed in Detroit to succeed. I hope it turns out to be good, AND finds an audience.
Tonight's episode will probably determine whether people will stay with this show or give up on it. It probably was a mistake putting it after "Breaking Bad".
