Well, I face that dilemma too. You should believe they exist as far as I'm concerned. Seems pretty obvious. The question is what are they. The admonition in the Bible is against seeking out familiar spirits, or dealing with people who use familiar spirits like the Witch of Endor who refered to a familiar spirit when channeling for King Saul.
Lev. 19:31 "Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God." A familiar spirit would be one whom a person uses to obtain information from - an active communication.
So I agree with you, I would never go to a medium or person who claims to contact the dead, and I think people like Sylvia Brown and James Van Praag, John Edwards, etc. are leading people astray and that that Leviticus admonition applies to them as they refer to spirit guides for their information. Well, the Bible is making it clear that they are working with demons to get this information, or..they're fakes. Sylvia Brown strikes me as a fake, but I don't know.
And according to the Bible, the dead are dead. They are unconscious, remember nothing, and sleep. So unless God Himself allows it (Lazarus for example), there's no way the living can communicate with human dead. I didn't give biblical references for it, but the Bible also forbids us from astrology and divination too. As for ghosts themselves, I don't know what they are. I never got a good idea from what I've read in the bible, but... if some kind of spirit entity is responding to a live human, it is not a departed human, it's demonic. And on that show where that one guy gets injured by an invisible force that attacks him as he leaves that bedroom which leaves that huge red welt area...that's demonic. But I wonder if energy itself can 'stamp' a location as well and have nothing to do with demons, but be more like a recording, like the music that the guys couldn't hear in Tombstone that showed up on the sound recording and sounded like a faded recording of saloon music from the 1800's.
I've worried if I'm inviting the wrong thing myself if I go to Pythian castle and actively ghost hunt too. It is fascinating. I guess we have to be careful not to get too entranced.

I believe that anything that harms you or trie to scare you out of your home isnt a good spirit, I dont know that they can or cannot contact us my mother was complete devastated when my grandmother died and was alone in the room with her and she was crying and she felt a warm sensation on her shoulder like a hand and a squeeze , she believes it was her mother comforting her since she had passed only minutes before so my mother has been a believer ever since. Sylvia Brown has been right on so many occasions it freaks me out to watch her, I dont know about demons( you know the ones with horns and such) but I believe if you were evil in life then you are in death.

Don't worry you can just call it a "Lifestyle" and it will be alright.

The interesting part is many religions ban any attempt at communication with the dead, apparently for many reasons. A number of cultures never speak of the dead, or if they do, never in the first person.

You may attribute some of it to a code that defines certain practices as immoral where that practice ruins what is held to be a normal human life in the living World. If you read further into it, the ban suggests those forbidden practices may be experienced on the "Other Side". Another way of saying the mixing of sides may corrupt both sides.

Apparently the Russians and maybe the US Government explored these subjects in conjunction with other para-phenomena.

One strange one is if you take a recording device and record a blank tape and then do certain analysis of that tape to "Blow up" the background noise, voices can be heard, including in various languages, some of which might not now be able to be indentified. Take from it what you will.

I for one am not interested in any of it. The admonitions are a good guide. Do not mess with the Devil. I did recently see an interesting book in the library. It talked of the various ways of ending ones life and tried to explore what one could experience at that moment and beyond. The final warning was humans are not geared to certain practices in a normal life. They seemed to be ambiguous around the subject of suicide because that is a way of hurrying a naturally occuring process. Even suicide as a final solution to dying is a tough subject. Again many religions also ban suicide.

So all the interest in paranormal may be treading on dangerous ground, the practice by an every growing crowd does not make it less so. Immoral behaviors will have the same effect as observed by those who sot to lay down ground rules for a healthy happy life in this World expressed in religion or many other ways.

The interesting one maybe is the Hindu / Buddhist believe / interpretation that every living thing already knows boths sides of the equation but one must be supressed / controlled in this life to enjoy the other. Only by following a set of rules can you achieve a goal. The rebirth in certain forms as punishment for disobeying. Clearly the argument for rebirth is valid in a very strict sense because atoms are recycled in many forms over the epoch markers.

Depending on what you chose to believe might determine your risk.

MoMark - this topic is right up my alley - thank you for thinking of it.

I love to watch "Ghost Hunters" and my favorite is on Friday nights on the Travel Channel "Most Haunted."

I've been interested in this topic since I was a child because I used to experience some very unusual things - still do! Members of my family have also had experiences, so to us it's not unusual. I have endless stories of seeing and hearing those who have passed, sometimes even before the phone call came.

I didn't understand what I was hearing/seeing when I was little, but eventually I did - found it fascinating and would read anything I could get my hands on about it.

I believe that the 'spirits' are our energy/souls out of the body, trapped on this physical dimension - they are who we all are in essence, literally. Often the experiences are energy imprints, like a video loop that repeats. I have come across some dark energies - they feel very different from a person who has died and has not moved on yet.

I watch these shows and think how I would LOVE to be there with those people using their night vision cameras and seeing what (who) pops up. Well, I guess if anyone thought I was weird before, I just confirmed it!

Thanks for starting this thread MoMark! Everyone's posts here are fascinating.http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f60/MurphChessLinus/ghost14.gif (broken link)

Not weird at all! I've always been interested too because of my own experiences. It's hard sometimes to share them because alot of people have mixed feelings about the subject.

That's true TXGRL. If someone mentions something on the topic I'll discuss it, usually I keep it to myself. Sometimes without thinking I'll mention something in passing then get a look from people like I have three heads.

I believe that everyone has an innate ability to sense things we cannot sense with our eyes and ears. People will get a funny feeling and not know why, but they are picking up an energy.

That's how I feel too. If someone brings it up I'll talk about it, otherwise I don't mention it for fear of turning too many heads lol.

I sometimes think it is "scared of the unknown",death and what happens after can be a delicate subject, some religions celebrate death as a new begining. I think it is actually comforting to know there is something after death. If you believe in the bible or you dont I think it is all a matter of interpretation. I do believe in evil spirits and those that are just lost, I would rather meet the nice ones!

Default ghosts

I have watched almost every episode of ghost hunters too and appreciate
it for all the same reasons discussed. She makes me watch Supernatural too,
and it is actually a pretty well done show somehow.

She and her family all have almost extreme stories from a few of the old
houses they used to live in. I can say I have noticed some things myself
but always rationalize my way out of it. Do I think she and her family are
crazy, potentially, but more than likely not. There are some things mentally
that can cause certain delusions, or otherwise but having more than one
seemingly sane person tell similar stories from the same house is proof enough
I guess.

I have the same audio equipment used by taps in my spare bedroom and
we tried the EVP thing for fun one time around Halloween. When I analyzed
the audio, there were some very strange things on there, and so I cut that
out real quick.

We went to Alton IL last year for the "Haunted Tour" over there, it is one
of the most haunted cities in the country. It was cool. This year we are
going to the Lemp Mansion for a tour, and I am really excited for that. We
do it for fun and entertainment but it does raise several questions. My take
is that there are people who are more "sensitive" to it.

Cool topic for Halloween

I doubt people's ability approaches that of animals to any degree. My dog is very special. She has the ability to navigate like a homing pigeon, can demo the ability to have long term memory and shows a remarkable ability to have what can only be described as ESP.

Surely the answer must be reincarnation. Probably a Pope or something like that in a former life, maybe several lives, navigator on a B-17 shot down in WWII.

Not all Popes go directly to heaven, some don't get the Royal Treatment, some good jokes there.

How many dogs do you know that shows an ability to fully understand the concept of ownership of possessions??? There is zero doubt she knows what is Her's and what is mine. Put her favorite food on a plate on a coffee table, leave for the entire day. Will not touch it. Put that same plate on the floor ownership transfers to her. She Knows I'm planning something different like a trip a few days in advance.

I basically don't believe in ghosts, spirits and most of that other stuff. I want to know nothing about it in this life, have communication or seeing anything I'm not supposed too. Don't Ask, Don't Pry, your time will come in all due speed to find out what we are not supposed to know in this life.
