can't believe it's been 20 years, seems like it was just last week. I liked the cinematic titanic facebook fan page and sometimes they have like special live events at select theaters
From the late '70's through 1986, I used to get together with friends each Saint Patrick's day for our annual Bad Film Festival. The introduction of the vcr made this possible. We would indulge in our favored intoxicants and pass a wonderful four or five hours making fun of the awful flicks we had found on tape. We had several that the MST3K folks later used on their show, which when it debuted in 1988, we all viewed as a rip off of our concept.
The difference of course is that we never thought to try and turn it into a money making program..well, that plus the MST3K people were better at it than we were.

I think one of the reasons this show was so successful was because so many of us had this concept. I never felt ripped off. It was more like, "oh look, they are doing what we do but only with a whole lot less beer and more robots!". It was the familiarity of it that made me fall in love with this show - a bunch of friends snarking on something cheesy.
I haven't watched it for years. I've seen some of the movies on Netflix and keep wondering if it was as awesome as I've built up in my memory for the past 20 years. I'd hate to watch them and decide that it isn't as funny as I remember.
We were so into it, we went to the Conventio-con Expo-fest-a-rama in 1994. We had a BLAST and saw all sorts of places in Minnesota and Wisconsin, including the Spam Museum, the Largest Ball Of Twine, House on the Rock, the huge mall. The live show was totally worth it.
