So we're in the middle of getting our place ready to rent, taxes, moving, etc.... as a result, I've let m daughter watch more TV (ok, ALOT more tv) than normal. We've got both amazon prime and netflix. Anyway, I've noticed a ton of pirates in everything she watches - Dora, Jake and something, Backyardigans, etc, etc.

What I've noticed is that pirates aren't protrayed as "thugs" but more as adventurers , LOL. They are looking for "hidden treasure" or gold like they are some sort of seagoing prospectors or something....

Yes, and there a lot of pirate-themed birthday parties and Halloween costume these days because of it. Jake and the Neverland Pirates is a big hit among the younger set.

"Seagoing Prospectors", you're right. Ahoy!

Er, um, oh..... except for Captain Phillips. Those are still the bad kind.

Actually, it's pretty simple, people are making money on them.

I think pirates have been cool among kids for a while, because of the whole adventure, sea-faring, treasure-seeking aspect. As a kid, "Treasure Island" was one of my favorite books for a while, and that's been a classic for how long now?

For one...pirate have always been cool....even before PotC....but especially since then.....

Yeah, historically.....there is a down side...but the idea of just risking it all on adventure and (sanitized) treasure hunting...who can resist the appeal. It's Indian Jones on the high seas...

Keep your kids grounded in reality and to enjoy the fiction....pirate are great....arrrr!

Pirates have been roguish heroes since Robert Louis Stevenson. Errol Flynn continued the tradition. Disney got in on the act. But really, everyone's favorite pirate has to be:
