didn't get a chance to watch him since he left while i was still in highschool
Nothing, absolutely NOTHING today compares to Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Heck even Jay Leno has said as much. Johnny was so insanely funny - he lost it so many times laughing at his guests. For those that didn't have the pleasure of watching him every night (his show used to be my main reason for going to bed - I would watch it before going to sleep)...here is one my favorite clips. I will always remember this one... I laughed my butt off watching this show, so many years ago. This is he and Doc Severinson, his band leader, discussing the upcoming holiday.

Tried again, just can't get it, and can't put my finger on why I don't like it other than it seems too derivative of SNL.
That and the manufactured cool man-boy nature of the host.
You know it was fashionable for years to criticize SNL (and its cast) for being past its prime and not funny anymore. But ratings seemed steady so it was evident that that opinion wasn't necessarily shared by the masses. I suppose there is a population that still resonates with SNL's form of humor who would therefore like Fallon. Doesn't do it for me.
At the risk of peeing people off by using a possibly bad analogy, it's sort of like way back when you had the Grateful Dead and all their legions of loyal fans and now we have evolved down to Dave Matthews and the people that follow him.
I watched the other night because James Spader was on. It was okay. I didn't find Mr. Fallon offensive or anything, and he did a serviceable job, but, kind of flat, which was the same issue I had with Mr. Leno.
If I am going to take the time to watch one of these shows, there has to be more entertainment value like Craig Ferguson and the puppets or something like that.
Of course, it could just be that when it comes to "chat" shows, my heart belongs to Graham Norton.
