All good points. I would just add that fear is an overall psychological and emotional influence on them — fear of walkers, fear of Negan, fear of strangers, fear of death, etc — as well as individual personality and psychological makeup. So, many men (or maybe even most men) would not be as ambitious or power-hungry as Negan. They would be content to live as a peon or sargeant or lieutenant under him; they wouldn't have the inclination or the drive to go out and establish their own kingdoms. They are willing to be worker-bees and to accept the status quo in exchange for some semblance of power, perks, stability, and safety. To them that's better than being on their own, alone, hungry, and fighting to stay alive in the forest underbrush. And Negan knows this.
That's not sustainable for long, though. Once people's most basic needs are met, like food or shelter, they crave a higher tier of needs like freedom and autonomy over one's own life. Negan doesn't seem to be offering those things to enough people to keep his house of cards from falling.
Oh and maybe this has been mentioned before but how are they in the woods if they are so close to DC? There should be hundreds of gated communities around.
Thats just AMC being cheap. But in fairness they lucked out finding "Alexandria." It is just too expensive to rent out people's homes and shut down streets so they have to get lucky looking around the fringes of metro Atlanta finding farms and prisons and radar stations they can use.
I agree, noodlecat, that fear is the best motivator but they still play fast and loose with their lives and the zombie threat seems trivial and contrived. The saviors dont really seem to have trouble with them and are equipped to deal with everything. It seems to all boil down to resources now. Must everybody in the show lives in walled communitied and Negan seems to be the only real threat.
I agree that people may crave a higher standard of living, but they also have a level of security which makes it unlikely that they will do much about changing the situation unless things get a lot worse. Most people want something familiar even if it is not always entirely comfortable. And most people are followers, not leaders.
Dwight tried to escape but ultimately surrendered and returned to the fold even while knowing what the consequences would be for him. Even though he is unhappy, he has food, shelter, and a little power. Maybe he is biding his time; who knows.
But, of course, Dwight, Negan, and the Saviors ultimately will do whatever the writers want them to do
Hey, it's just something to do to pass the time between episodes. Plus for me it's these different aspects of the show that makes it interesting to watch. If it was just mindless zombie-killing, then I would switch it off.
