I think that Rick recognized someone he knew in that crowd. Maybe someone he knew in his life prior to the zombie outbreak. Maybe a former coworker, a friend, a family member? I know he wants to build an army but it wouldn't make sense that he'd automatically assume that the army of women converging on him would be on his side and not a threat.
I'm with you, I bet it is a bunch of cop friends of Rick.
Haven't seen Eugene, does Negan have him? I forget...
Personally, I thought Rick was smiling because in his mind, it was another group he could hopefully convince to fight against the saviors and these people appears to be already trained and armed. Remember, it is bodies that Rick needs so that they can stand up to the Saviors. The Saviors seem to be an easy ice breaker for groups in that area. All they have to say is that they are tired of being bullied by the Saviors and chances are, the other group will be in the same boat.
Yep, that's exactly what I thought when I saw Rick smile. He sees this new group as potential allies with fighters and weapons for the battle with Negan.
And I guess Rosita is the new Abraham. Maybe if you hang with an ex-military type long enough, you start learning things by osmosis, like how to defuse bombs and how to tell if a stick of dynamite is okay just by looking
Overall I really enjoyed this episode and hope they can keep the momentum going through the rest of the season. I loved seeing the whole group back together again, more or less, and working together as a team

How can it be anyone but Gabriel? After all they were there because of the clue in the bible.

I thought this as well. Rewatching the episode, I think it's also a reference to Michonne's comment earlier after the zombie slice takedown where she started her "We're the ones that live" spiel by saying "Smile!"
I never remember Rick smiling as much as he did in this weeks eppi?
