Star Trek may or may not have been the first television series with a cult following, but there have been an explosion of them since the beginning of the 21st century, thanks to cable, satellite, and now the Internet vanquishing the "Big Three" networks' dominance. I'm going to throw out a few titles from decades past. Can you think of any others?

The Prisoner (1960s)
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1970s)
Hill Street Blues and Saint Elsewhere (1980s)

Here is a list from Entertainment Weekly.

P.S. I guess I would define "cult television" as programming with mediocre ratings that has strong appeal to a small number of people who go beyond merely watching episodes but creating "fan fiction" and attending conventions.

Sorry, I can't open the link. So I may be repeating that list.

LAW and ORDER..... all of them.

BTVS

Fringe

MacGyver

X-Files

Hercules (with Kevin Sorbo) (be still my heart!)

Downton Abbey? I bet it's a cult over in England

CSI the original?? I can see geeks playing games talking, obsessing on it.

Twilight Zone

that's all I can think of top of my head.

Dark Shadows (1966-1971), weird vampire TV soap opera, a real original for the (overwhelmingly female) soap opera crowd, but they loved it.

American Gothic (1995-1996) I loved the creepy atmosphere and the cast was stellar. So sad it only ran for one season.

Lots of recent shows on that list -- don't think they went back far enough.

Agree with their top pick -- Dr. Who. Like it or not, it has a huge, select following.

They skipped Monty Python! 35 years ago, it was shown on PBS in the States, and gained a small but strong following.

The Prisoner (definitely!) Loved that show.

Jem and the Holograms has a HUGE cult following (They have their own CON and a new live action movie coming out)

My Little Ponies (the new cartoon) has a following and they call themselves Bronies.

That list should have been renamed "Cult shows from 2000 or later, give or take a few".

Some others:

The original "The Avengers". "The Saint". "Peter Gunn". Although maybe they're more of a cult show now than they were then. Heck, at one point "Saturday Night Live" - then known as "Saturday Night" - was a cult show.

"Get a Life" with Chris Elliot. Weird, but endearing.
"Kids in the Hall", the Canadian comedy troupe.

I would include the Irwin Allen 1960s TV shows: "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", "Lost in Space", "Land of the Giants", "Time Tunnel".

Cartoons: "Animaniacs" and "The Tick". Both probably were more popular among adults than among kids.

Same with "Pee Wee's Playhouse". That was in my pre-VCR days, and I felt like a kid myself sitting down in front of the TV on Saturday mornings.
