Even Reality TV is not real. Thank God for that!

Default Are Americans really like this?

No, we're worse!

Let me clarify: I never said TV shows represent real life. However they have to be based on some reality to be accepted by the audience.
For example, if a similar story takes place in India or Egypt, it would be ridiculous.

So the question is how true it is.

The bottom line is that a TV show about nice people who never do anything wrong and are generally happy would be really boring and get cancelled in about a week. Most Americans aren't murderers, either, but most of the highest rated scripted shows are crime dramas.

Men still sleep around in these countries, they just have to be more discreet about it.

If anything I think Americans are more sexually reserved than other Western nations.

That is truly the way upper-middle class white-collar Americans dressed in the 60s. Cars, home furnishings, pretty accurate as well.

Everything else...not so much.

If it were not 100% true, they would not make a program about it, right?

These shows are a substitute for the boring lives of most of the viewers. If they have a good, interesting life, they wouldn't watch that junk.

It does not show a lot of music, but I like the melodies at the end of each episode.
I am familiar with some of those too.

Why would the storylines be ridiculous?

Do you know in India there's an epidemic of married women getting STDs and HIV, especially truck drivers who visit brothels and hookers while on the road?

That would be a different story from Mad Men. That would be a story about truck drivers visiting brothels while on the road.
