as someone who was born in 1981 and graduated high school in 1999 I can safely say it was fun watching a documentary of my life growing up haha BUT the one part of the 3 night series that I felt kind of was not needed was the fact that they included the show The West Wing in it and in fact gave it way more time than it needed.
Why?
The West Wing didn't debut until the fall of 1999 so is it really part of 90s history / culture? The show ran til 2006 so should it not be considered a piece of early 2000s history / culture?
I'm confident the only reason it was included was because a.) the show featured Rob Lowe and he is well Nat Geo's Morgan Freeman (Narrator for life).
It was rather irritating, since a host with any humility would try to avoid mentioning anything in a documentary having to do with them personally, in an effort to keep "professional distance" from the project material. IIRC, he also got in on the action in their 1980s retrospective when they talked about the (long-forgotten) sex tape he filmed at one of the presidential conventions (I want to say 1988, but I might be wrong). I remember thinking "Is he bragging about this, or trying to atone?" Either way, it's bad form to make yourself part of the story.
The documentary series was well done, overall, though, and their choices of interview subjects was mostly on the mark. At least it wasn't a bunch of self-professed "comedians" using the events as material for half-baked jokes.
Ironically, before watching I was thinking that the 90s were so recent that I wouldn't enjoy the doc. But, after starting it seemed as if those things happened so long ago. Time does fly and the older you get the faster it goes.
I saw it. Enjoyed it, despite that it was filled with liberal bias
