It is no way as great as True Detectives (first season) was, but I like it for the same kind of reasons/feelings.

True Detective had the benefit of being able to have a more open skyline and dramatic settings--
this show is very closed--and while I get that the dark, closed-in, tenament/urban settings are both historical and thematic--
I think that translates into more of an "unnatural"...ie man-made environment---
set details are great but they are also "fake" to certain extent...

the early scenes when Cillian Murphy was riding his horse through the city streets in the dawn, smoke were awesome...but you don't get that effect very often...

True Detective had that awesome tree--totally realistic and tied to sense of place and destiny- same with the scenes in other locals--real, concrete, evidentiary--
And while I love Cillian Murphy and the woman playing Aunt Polly, I think we can agree that most of the others are not on same level...
writing is not as good either...and there is no mystery to solve really--we know the good guys and the bad ones...

I think this is more obviously comparable to Boardwalk Empire--
same time/era, same slice of society, same theme--bad guy wants a slice of the American Dream even if he is in Birmingham...
I don't care for this last season of Boardwalk--I miss Richard more than I anticipated...

In Peaky Blinders, I loved his loyalty to family and friends. I just really liked HIM.
Didn't care much for True Detective but loved Matthew and Woody.

Yes, closer to Boardwalk and miss Richard too.

Why was I thinking there was more than one season available on Netflix? I finished season 1 and was looking forward to season 2. Not available. Anyone know when season 2 will be available?

I've just binge watched Life with Damian Lewis. Thinking I had seen Aunt Polly in a 21st century L.A. show I looked her up to find it to be Helen McCrory, wife of Damian Lewis, star of Life, the same Helen McCrory of Peaky Blinders.

Gosh--had no idea they are married to each other.
She looks older even w/o her Aunt Polly makeup...
