George RR Martin says don't blame him. Martin is getting a lot of complaints on his site. The rape scenes was not in the book. The torture of Theon Greyjoy by Ramsey Bolton was very upsetting. I just leave the room if I don't want to watch.
It was a terrible thing, but remember Ramsey skinned two people alive (we only saw the corpses) for not paying their taxes. He also hunted down a young girl with his girlfriend, killed her with an arrow and a pack of dogs.
The rape scene disgusted them, but Theon/Reek's torture and sex reassignment scenes were ok?
Red wedding murders were ok?
This is Game of Thrones.
And that's the point. The violence on this show --- and the sexual violence in particular --- has gone beyond "shocking" storytelling and well into gratuitous.
Sex, violence, etc. can be part of great storytelling, but the GoT TV show is just using it for shock value. This has ALWAYS been part of the show, even in season 1. But I think even the die-hard fans are getting a little nauseous at this point.
And the filmmakers do seem to enjoy rape scenes waaaaay too much. They keep putting them in the TV show where they aren't in the book. Daenerys's "wedding night" is a great example. In the book, that particular scene is certainly graphic, but it also does a lot to develop the character and relationship of both Dany and Drogo. Dany is certainly NOT raped or forced in the book. Quite the reverse. But in the show? It might be a bit of a stretch to call it a rape scene, but Dany is certainly not the willing participant she is in the book.
And I'm a little afraid that as a reaction, rather than realize their mistake and stop, the filmmakers will say, "We don't disrespect women! We're equal opportunity rapists. To prove it to you, we'll start raping men and goats in season 6! In fact, our FX guys are already hard at work on the scene where the dragons gang rape an entire herd of horses!"
Im a fan of the show but the scene did disgust me. Added to the fact that im starting to lose interest in the show, im not sure if i will continue watching
There is a difference between violence and sexual violence. The producers for some odd reason change the plot to include the later too often - for whatever reason. It wasn't necessary nor holding to the story in the Sansa case.
I guess for me it was just another use/abuse of Sansa. Without a doubt the weakest of Starks, but not in her eyes. I gave up True Blood at the beginning of its' 3rd season, I'll give Game of Thrones until the end of this season. Tyrion is the only character that holds my interest right now.
I read on another site that Bronn was poisoned? What did I miss??
He got cut by a blade from one of the sand snakes and they, like their father Oberyn, are renowned for using poisoned blades.
