Sell this House
Anyone watch this?
We have our home for sale so I've watched it a few times. The main thing is to get rid of the clutter, garbage and make the people feel like it's a pleasant experience as they go for 'open house'.
What cracks me up is the people going through the house on most episodes and making comments about everything but the house.
Oh, the tv is too big, the couc is too blue, I don't like the bedspread and curtains. Then on another episode, one guy didn't have enough furniture and pictures.
What's up with that?
Can these people not look past some of this and talk more about the house?
Bring on the opinions.

No, most buyers can't see past the current occupant's stuff. We rented a POD the last time we put our house on the market. We and our 3 kids had the bare essentials and that POD was packed to the gills and people STILL complained about our stuff. Between professionally staged model homes and these shows ... it isn't doing sellers any favors. Yes, homes should be clutter free, but you still have to live there while the house is selling in most cases. I would honestly rather look at a completely empty house myself. Sellers have to put up with so much doo doo in buyer's markets. People are so mean spirited, but it's called "honesty". Whenever we look at houses, I'm very short and to the point. I simply say "no" without elaborating. Chances are the reason the house didn't make the cut is because of something the owner can't change (location, layout).

We also rented a storage unit when we were getting ready to sell our old house. It's just me and my husband, so I'm sure we were able to scale down even more than you did.
On the flip side, as a buyer I was usually able to look past the decor of the owners, but once in a while, you just have to comment if something's really bad. We looked at one house that had a basement with red and tan stripes (each about 1 ft wide) painted on the wall.

We're down to the bare essentials now at our house but I understand nobody likes to walk in a house and see a bunch of personal stuff.
When we were looking to buy a house in NM, most of the houses we looked at were being lived in and all very cluttered. They could have emptied the ashtrays and the kitty litter. Some houses smelled like kitty litter or backed up toilets or whatever and those we passed up on but on the others, we looked past the furniture and found us a place.

That show to me seems like all the potential buyers do is make nasty comments about the house they are looking at. I don't care who's got what in the house i'm looking for, i look past it. People have to live in their homes and i'd rather see a house that looks lived in with the owners things around, than some sterile staged home. That show is very annoying.

I really don't like this show - or shows like it. They always seem to have the worst case scenario with sellers that appear to have no clue what they are doing wrong.
I can look past decor - but clutter and cleanliness are a different story. I find that, more times than not, the way people present their homes during a sale is often an indication of how they took care of the home (maintenence, upkeep, cleaning).

I LOVE that show. Specifically, I enjoy seeing what Roger and Tanya do with some of the fugliest, nastiest homes imaginable. Nobody has universally appealing taste in decor, so that's really not my point. What I have found unbelievable is the fact that some of the would-be sellers on that show have actually let their homes go on-camera, let alone on-camera with open-house feedback, with dirty litterboxes, unmade beds, unspeakable clutter, etc. The prospective buyers probably feel, and rightfully so, that someone who wouldn't even do basic housekeeping when trying to sell, also wouldn't perform essential home upkeep (cleaning gutters and flues, pest control, etc.).
The tips I've picked up on home staging from "Sell This House" have been invaluable, and will (I hope) be useful in selling our current home, provided my prayers are answered and we're able to get OUT of this paved outhouse of a town.

I agree with what you're saying about filth, i would think twice if i went into a dirty house, with disgusting filled litterboxes, but what annoys me is all these shows say " well let's get rid of personal items". I don't want to go into a home and see a sterile, staged environment, it would turn me off. Everybody knows people live there and it's nicer to see evidence of it. Of course they should clean it up and make it appealing, but there's no need for a staged environment.

I am sure they pick the houses that will be good TV for a makeover; otherwise the show won't work. It's pretty funny to see people just pick everything apart!
