I think Firefly has to qualify as the most well-known series that was killed before its time. I did not know about it when it aired (me and everyone else, it seems), but the non-stop talk about it finally wore me down, and I watched it.

WOW! One of the best series ever. Can't even imagine what it would have been like, had it kept going.

Another vote for firefly.

I also recently rewatched Max Headroom. While the production quality was low, the concepts were quite good.

Definitely. I think it's why FOX was so patient with Fringe...they didn't want another Firefly situation.

Yes, I stretched the OP's boundaries. But Deadwood was a massively popular and critical success, it's the textbook example of a series that was prematurely killed. It won dozens of Emmys and SAGs and undoubtedly would have run many more seasons had it not been for the political mess ups.
Word on the street is that the long-awaited follow-up "movie" might still happen.

No show that I truly loved super deeply has ever been prematurely cut off. However, there have been shows I really liked that I was surprised to see canceled.

Firefly...yeah. That's the one I really didn't get. I really liked that show a lot.

Other less well-known series I started on Netflix and liked until I realized there was only one season:
Emily Owens, MD
Out of Practice

Then I don't know why they canceled that show Forever. Not my FAVORITE show, by any means, but I was enjoying it.

On a funny note, my father calls me The Killer of Series because any program I enjoy on his Indian tv channel gets prematurely canceled. All the problems are suddenly and quickly fixed and dealt with and the show goes off-air out of the blue. Any show I dub boring and stupid runs on and on and on...

I'll second this. The concept was for all purposes resurrected with Forever, but that also got cancelled after 1 season.

There was a series with Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice. I think it was called "Touching Evil." I really liked that show.

"I'll Fly Away" starred Sam Waterston (Jack McCoy on "Law and Order") It was on PBS if I recall. Very interesting and controversial program.

Pushing up Daisies and Backstrom.

BTW hasn't the Backstrom replacement, Rosewood lasted longer than Backstrom did? I can't stand Rosewood and don't understand how. It's boring, just the same formula as 100 other current and past detective/police shows.
