Yeah, I hadn't thought of that but the gay storyline does seem out of left-field. And it was the Christmas episode, right? (Not Thanksgiving?)
It would have made more sense for Kevin to be gay, as he doesn't seem like the manliest man -- nor does his adult insecure self match the teenaged tough jock version.
I do know that there's no way I would let a stranger and former crack addict (or whatever) get near my young daughters in the space of a week or two.

Yes, the Christmas episode, not Thanksgiving, my mistake.
And as much as I think the actor who plays Grandpa is very good, the way in which he just plunged into sweet harmonious domesticity with the family seems a little disingenuous as well, heartwarming as it is.
The two parents could have gotten to know him better before deciding anything. But she let fear rule her response. Obviously, it left her son with some insecurities, never being able to know anything about who his parents were. The show just crammed way too much into that one fall finale...it would have been better to put off some of that until later.
This show is excellent! Easily one of my favorite shows of 2016 ...out of Netflix or network TV. It's a great show and the way it's structured and setup is incredible.
For anyone interested, it appears USA is airing 10 episodes consecutively on 1/7/17. I missed the show when it first started and it was a few weeks in when I noticed it was on so I never started DVRing it. The January marathon will give us a chance to see if it's something we'll enjoy.

You can watch all 10 episodes right now on NBC on demand.
They ran ep1 again last night, and even thought I'd seen it the first time, I caught a lot of things that I missed before, not knowing the storyline yet, and not knowing what to pay attention to.
Like: Randall's mother was a drug addict who died in childbirth. Didn't remember that.
And the The Manny episode where Kevin melted down (ooooohhhh Alan Thicke!). Didn't think that was significant enough to pay attention to it at the time.
And the extreme obsession with food and calories by Kate. And the binges. And the dog poop on top of the junk food she trashed. Totally missed that last time.
Good stuff. Looking forward to the new shows!
