And we're slowly ending our relationships with those who want us to pay for things that used to be free.

Soon we'll have all this extra money and nothing to occupy our time.

Use to be free? Was it, really?

Back in the days when it came over the airwaves or through the cable but before we had the capacity to record it was about the only time it was "free" but it certainly came with conditionals. We could only see it when it was shown. We didn't watch it on our schedule and we could only see it again in a rerun or some form of syndication.

The actors, further, were at the short end since they were only paid for a limited number of showings.

The situation now has quite changed. The conditions of our watching is much more favorable to us and smart actors have it in their contract for them to be paid anytime their work is shown.

So it is unreasonable that people now ask for payment since the free situation was, quite frankly, an entirely different ballpark.

I think there are scenarios within which, at least on a limited basis, certain consumers were able to exploit certain offerings in certain ways that would constitute the proverbial "free lunch". I've got a DVR and my neighbor doesn't, yet he watches as much television as I do if not more. You cannot tell me that there isn't a difference there in terms of the perception of "free" versus "pay", in the context of what must be the eventual reality, i.e., the playing field being leveled between my neighbor and I.

I recently cut the cord and free TV is amazing. HD. More channels. More re-runs. When I don't know what I want to watch on streaming I flip channels and am amazed.

Since this deals with cost I'll post in this thread.

Checked my Hulu account a few minutes ago and noticed they will be charging me tax for the first time, so instead of $11.99 for the no commercial plan it'll be $12.84 in May. Not a big deal unless you sometimes have less than a dollar in your account. Admittedly, I've done that a time or two in the past. Just wanted to give a head's up to other Hulu subscribers.

Interesting... Wasn't Ohio intending to start taxing Hulu in 2014?

Honestly not sure. I only signed up with Hulu about a year ago and never paid taxes on it. Just a guess, but they may have been paying the taxes on their end for a year to keep my cost as low as possible so I'd be more likely to get hooked on keeping Hulu on a continuous basis. With or w/o the taxes I like the service enough to keep it.
