A clue that a recurring character is taking a permanent vacation, is when the actor is listed as a guest star at the beginning of the episode.
Too bad, I like that actor and I think the character deserved a better exit (and you would think a former FBI deputy director would be more valuable alive than a lower-ranking agent)
He was shot in the chest 3 times. Even if he had on a bulletproof vest there was blood from the 3 wounds. I wonder if this show will be renewed - hopefully if there are no plans to renew, it will have an ending that answers all our questions.
Spoiler: Sorry I don't know how to do the spoiler thing. Don't go further if you didn't watch this past week.
.
The actor went on the Denzel Washington Is The Greatest Actor Of All Time, Period podcast and spoiled it himself, with the shocked host saying all what are you doing. I guess he was mad at the producers and don't expect others to have a blacklisting mentality.

That's really interesting. He was on a season-long "probation" with a guest starring credit. Like I said, I'm not sure why a former director of the FBI is less valuable to the conspirators than lower-ranking Wells, but it makes sense outside of the show's story.
This episode's story (and the show's plot in general) reminds me of the 90s movie Arlington Road.
