So the CW got it's hands on the Archie comics and a new show called Riverdale will be premiering in January. It's very dark and VERY different from the comics I grew up reading. I know the Archie comics have changed a lot over the years (archie becomes a spy, zombies take over Riverdale, Archie vs, the Predator, etc) but I am curious how how others who were/are fans of the comics feels about the new show.
Oh man! Why are they gonna change up Archie? I used to read the comic books with Archie & the gang and it was nice, normal, everyday stuff and STILL popular without all this new outlandish, extra new stuff.
As the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
I did, however, hear a year or 2 ago that the Archie comic series closed with the death of Archie. But I just pretend like it never happened just like I try to do with bad episodes of TV shows (like the final season of Roseanne).
The young man in the video doesn't look anything like the Archie I grew up reading. He's a darker, more moody sort, sort of a Robert Pattinson look. His hair definitely looks dyed. The trailer looks like Archie-as-Edmund-from-Twilight meets Game of Thrones' Sansa. Weird, and not necessarily in a good way. I wish they'd have used new characters.
I watched the series premiere, and basically liked it.
I thought they did a good job casting Archie, Betty, and Veronica. Also thought they did well re-creating Riverdale & Pop's Diner (as vintage, small-town America).
I agree with early posters in this thread tho.. about the innate, light-hearted nature of Archie comics, that this series seems to abandon. I get that Archie is working to adapt & stay relevant. But going dark isn't always an upgrade, or necessary to retain fans and/or expand a contemporary audience. Just my take.
I liked it. Scandal is going to fall by the wayside, and I'll watch Chicago Med on demand.
I'm most curious about the Archie-Jughead split. What did Jughead mean when he told Archie that "talking about it would have worked with me"? When I was a kid reading Archie comics, they were best friends.
I really enjoyed it. Loved Archie and Veronica. Perfect casting with those two. I'll definitely keep watching. Gossip Girl was the last teen drama I watched on network TV so finally I have one to watch.
I lived in the Riverdale section of The Bronx until i was 13
