When "Summer Place" aired on TV (early-mid? 1960's), my mom chased us boys out of the living room. Every time we'd walk in, she'd jump up, change the channel, and tell us to go to our room.
My dad used to forbid me to watch soap operas. So I'd watch them at my grandparents' house or at home when he wasn't there.
This was the 1970's & '80s. So another route I took sometimes was to borrow a certain radio from my parents which played radio stations AND television stations.
I figured I'd rather miss seeing my soaps but still hear them rather than miss them entirely. And when I did that, my dad never noticed or realized that I had soap operas playing.
Dark Shadows. We were catholic, what does that have to do with it, the Lord only knows. There were no vampires or werewolves in the bible.
So we'd go to a neighbor whose mom wasn't home during the day, shut all the curtains and watch every day in the summer. Good times! Scream and scare the heck out of each other.
The two I remember not being allowed to watch were Bonanza and Star Trek. Wide World of Disney was also frowned upon.
I always managed to get over to my aunt and uncle's house for the first two and watched them there. They had a color TV so that was just icing on the cake.
I was 13 when Star Trek started.
