Why does their dream home have to be some McMansion? Maybe their dream home is exactly what you see. My dream home is an RV remodeled to meet my standards. My dream may not be your dream.
I'm not asking why lottery winners don't want to spend big.
My questions are, Why is this show on the air? What are the producers of HGTV's My Lottery Dream Home trying to accomplish with this show?
On the surface, it would seem the title implies, "live vicariously through these big winners and imagine yourselves in these lavish homes!"
Is their intent to trick us? Mission accomplished.

I think the producers sold the show on the premise which sounds exciting but then casting realities set in and the execution got weak. Real estate shows are so popular HGTV probably doesn't even care that the premise isn't really followed through on.

I gotta say, though, he doesn't show it if he does. He demonstrates great skills and personality whether he's showing a $100k home or a $1M home.

Yep 5 mil would be just enough to remodel the RV and have enough to use it to travel the US and Canada for a few years without worrying about expenses.
Although, if the 5 mil win is before taxes, you wouldn't have much left over at the end of that 2 or 3 years.

If I won 5 mil, I would use 20k to purchase and remodel my rv and I would invest the rest (and yes I've already looked into it and I know exaclty how much I will be spending). That investment would allow me to live quite comfortably for the rest of my life.

Oh okay I was thinking a remodel like music people do to their tour buses. That can cost a whole lot more than you're wanting to spend.
After taxes, I'd only have about 2.8 million in my state. I'd also make sure I had enough for retirement, but that would mean going really really easy on the luxury items. I probably wouldn't even purchase a dream home, I'd probably sell the house I have and rent.
Homes are expensive to keep up, and can take time to call the work people and and call around for a good price then be there when they show up and all that crap. I'd only buy if I won enough money to be able to hire stuff done no matter how much it costs and I don't think 2.8 is enough if I want to be able to have it last till I die. I honestly think that the carefreeness of apartment living is better suited for my future plans unless I had at least 5 million cash after taxes. Then I'd have to reassess.
I don't get the popularity of My Lottery Dream Home on HGTV. Each episode begins with a couple who has just won the lottery of a million or more dollars. Sometimes more than five million dollars.
So you'd think that their lottery "dream" homes would be some opulent, normally unattainable house ones could not usually afford had they not won millions of dollars.
... I saw one where the winner's budget was just $100k - $200k. Hardly what I'd call a "dream" home if I'd won the lottery.
I know what you mean ... but in some of the places (Missouri, Montana, Nebraska) I've seen on recent episodes, $200-250k gets the purchaser a home that would cost close to 2 million or thereabouts in NYC and its surrounding suburbs. Those three words in real estate are undeniably true ... location, location, location.

Agreed, my dream home was my car, err went from mobile home using free vegetable oils gas , to alternative energy powered tiny house (don't get me started about the tiny luxury show where the 250 sq ft house starts at 100k ), to a fully off grid 3d printed house.
Agree with most posters after taxes, that million won't last if you splurge on a McMansion. I would rather splurge on traveling the world and cruises. And invest on rental property or a business. And of course!! Hit the casinos!!!
